Before you Begin

This is a quick and easy way to restore or retrieve your files that are located on your Home Drive (as well as network drives I, O, and N) that you may have accidentily deleted. This is done differently in XP than in Windows 7/Vista.

Shadow copies are created at 7am and 7pm daily for these drives. The shadow copies are what you will be viewing and retrieving your files from in the steps below.

If you are at home you will need to connect to the VPN to do this.

Restoring and Retrieving your Files (Windows 7 and Vista)

Navigate to the drive where your file was deleted from.

Right-click either on the drive or on a folder in your drive.

Click on Restore Previous Versions

A new window will pop up searching for previous versions, when it finishes searching it will show you all the latest versions based on when they were shadow copied, not when you last changed them.

Double-click on which ever previous version you need and it will open up a new windows explorer window with all the documents that were backed up at that time.

Navigate to the file that you would like to get back.

Right click the file and click copy.

Navigate to where you would like the file to be at. Right-click in this location and paste the file to this location.

Your document should now be restored to the location of your choice.

Retrieving and Restoring your files on Windows XP

Right-Click on your Homedrive and go to Properties

Basics

What is spyware?

Spyware is a type of malware (malicious software) that acquires personal information from your computer and reports it to another computer system or user without your knowledge or permission. Usually spyware is used by online businesses for marketing purposes. They use the spyware to obtain information about what hardware or software you have and the manufacturers. Sometimes spyware can obtain personal information on what sites you visit and if you do business with any competitors. They can also obtain your email address to sell to other companies causing an increase of Spam.

Spyware is rarely alone on your computer an affected machine usually had multiple infections.

Signs of an infection Include:

Your computer slows to a crawl due to several spyware programs using up your memory resources.

Ad pop up even when you are offline.

You click on a link to go to one site, but your browser gets hijacked and you end up at another site.

When you enter a search item, a new and unexpected site handles the search.

Your bookmarks change on their own.

You click your Home button but it takes you to a new site, and when you switch the setting back, the new site appears again anyway.

You get pop-up ads that address you by name even when you have not visited site at which you have registered.

What are some common ways of aquiring spyware?

Usually spyware is placed on a computer system in the form of internet cookies or programs that are set to run when your computer starts. Spyware cookies can be avoided by disabling cookies within your browser, but a lot websites such as Hotmail and Online Stores require cookies to be enabled to login to the site.

Some websites automatically install spyware on your computer when you visit them. A popup will display on your screen and then the installation will either prompt you to accept installation or it will automatically initiate without your consent.

Some free software and ad-supported software are supported by spyware and install the spyware when you install the free software One example is Kazaa’s default installation.

How to deal with Spyware?

There are two different programs that you can download to help fight spyware. Spybot – Search and Destroy and Super Anti Spyware. Both of these are free programs that search your computer for spyware, uninstall it. These programs can also help prevent anymore known spyware from being placed on your computer. These programs will need to be updated from time to time to look for new spyware.

These programs can be downloaded from Google or provided from the Helpdesk onto your laptop or on a flashdrive.

Basics Podcasting is defined as providing a media file over the internet using syndication feeds for playback [...]

Basics

Podcasting is defined as providing a media file over the internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players (such as iPods) and personal computers. The process of recording a media file to broadcast in this manner is also referred to as podcasting. The term “podcasting” was adopted from the iPod, a device manufactured by Apple. XML files, often called “feeds”, are used to subscribe to the podcasts placed online.

Who can make a Podcast?

Anyone! Technically anyone can record a podcast and share it, as long as they have a server to place the audio file on and a “feed” for potential listeners to subscribe to. The ITS department provides both of these necessities for faculty and staff to create podcasts for the campus community. Unfortunately, at this time students cannot host their podcasts on university servers.

What is the purpose of a Podcast?

Podcasts are valuable educational tools that are becoming increasingly common on campuses across the nation. Faculty members can record their class lectures and make them available for students via podcasts. Providing students with a podcast lecture not only makes it easier for anyone who missed the lecture to catch up, but it also allows students who were there to review key points. Imagine how much more students can learn when they have access to a lecture 24 hours a day. Departments can use podcasts to share news in an interesting innovative style, or to advertise upcoming events the way one might broadcast on the radio.

How do I make my Podcasts available?

Faculty and staff need a Blackboard account to host their audio files. The audio files can be stored in your “Content Collection” on Blackboard. Once you have the URL for the audio file you can generate a feed by visiting the ITS Podcast Feed Generator at: http://secure2.umflint.edu/podcasting.

Where can I find more information on Podcasting? For more information on podcasting checkout the ITS project page for podcasting at: http://www.umflint.edu/its/units/initiatives/podcasting.htm.
