Before you Begin

These steps are for Faculty, Staff, and Students that currently know what their LAN password is.  If you do not know what your LAN password is please use the steps found here: http://www.umflint.edu/helpdesk/perm/passwords/using-httpspassword-umflint-edu-to-change-your-forgotten-lan-password/

Changing your LAN Password

1. Navigate to https://password.umflint.edu/ in any browser.
2. Login using your uniqname and LAN password.
3. Click Change Password from the options menu.
   
4. Type your new password in both blanks provided. Once you have typed your password twice and it meets the minimum requirements the change password button will activate.
• Be sure your password meets the requirements listed at the top of the page. As you type your new password a guide will appear to help you meet the requirements.
• A strength meter will appear to the right of your new password to help you see how
  strong your new password is.
  
5. Click Change Password to change your password.
6. Once your password has been changed the following screen will appear and you will be done.
7. Click Continue on this screen to navigate back to the password manager main menu.

These steps are for Faculty, Staff, and Students who do not remember their current LAN password or who are having trouble with their current LAN password.

Students who have never had a LAN password should go to http://my.umflint.edu and in the upper right corner click “New Students Click Here“.

Changing your Forgotten LAN Password

You will need to know your LAN password in order to change your security questions.  If you do not know the answers to your current security questions and you do not know your current LAN password you will need to contact the ITS Helpdesk at 810-762-3123 for assistance. 

 Changing Your Security Questions

Your LAN password is your Local Area Network password and is used to access the following items:
Webmail, Blackboard, SIS, Campus Computers, Papercut Stations, Wireless Access, VPN and EZ-Proxy.

The LAN password guidelines require:

• At least eight characters
  • The maximum amount of characters is can be is sixteen
• Contain at least 3 of the following items
  • Uppercase Letters
  • Lowercase Letters
  • Numbers
  • Symbols
• The system will not allow commonly used passwords ( “password” or “thisismypassword”).

If you type your password incorrectly three times, your LAN account will be locked. Please contact the ITS Helpdesk for assistance unlocking your account. Otherwise, your account will automatically unlock in 30 minutes.

To Change Your LAN Password:

Option 1: Change Password through the Password Change System (https://password.umflint.edu/forgot)

You will not need to know your old LAN password to change your new password this way.  You will need to know the answers to your two security questions that we have on file.  Only options 1 and 2 allow you to change your password without knowing the old password.

Option 2: Bringing Picture ID to the Helpdesk

You come to any of the ITS Open Computer Labs (3174 WSW or 206 MSB) with a picture ID and we can assist you with changing your password. (See www.umflint.edu/helpdesk for the current semester hours)

Option 3: Change Password with Webmail

This method will use the Forgot Your Password link found at https://email.umflint.edu.  This method will require you to know your old LAN password.

1. Navigate to https://email.umflint.edu
2. Type in your Outlook Account information as follows:
   • For Uniqname enter your uniqname.
   • For Current Password, enter your current LAN password.
   • For New Password, enter your new LAN password.
   • For Confirm New Password, retype your new password.
3. Click Ok.
4.  A box will pop up if you password was successfully changed.

Option 4: Change Password through the Log-In Screen of a Owned University Computer.

 This method can only on-campus and only using a university owned machine. This method also requires the knowledge of your previous password.

1. Once you have logged in, Click the Crtl, Alt , and Del keys at the same time
2. Press the Change Password button in the bottom-left corner.
3. Type in your LAN password information as follows:
   • Select FLINT-NT in the log on to field.
   • For Old Password, enter your current LAN password.
   • For New Password, enter your new password.
   • For Confirm New Password, retype your new password.
4. Press Ok.

Option 5: Change Password through the Password Management Sytem when your Current Password is Known. (https://password.umflint.edu)

 This method requires the knowledge of your previous password.

The Kerberos password is the password that is used mainly for programs put forth by the University of Michigan- Ann Arbor.  Kerberos has many requirements about what it can or cannot be.

Kerberos is used for

• Mirlyn (Library Catalog)
• Viewing pay stubs online (for employees only)
• Accessing and editing your U-M Online Directory entry
• PEERS
• Other resources available on UM-Ann Arbor websites

Kerberos Restrictions

1. It must be at least nine characters long*
2. It cannot contain three letters forwards or backwards from your name or uniqname
3. It cannot contain repeating numbers (i.e. 333) or sequences (i.e. 123)
4. It doesn’t like most dictionary words **

*It seems that the longer the password it is, the easier it is to set
** The easiest way to remedy this is to switch numbers for letters (i.e. instead of using ‘tree’ use ‘tr3e’) . Please see related articles for common number-letter switches

Option 1: Change Password through Ann Arbor’s site:

This works if you know you current password

1. Open Internet Explorer.  In the address bar type: https://weblogin.umich.edu/ and press Enter.
2. At the prompt enter your uniqname and current Kerberos password and then click the Log In button.

Type your current Ann Arbor password – (it is case-sensitive)

1. Click the link Change Your UMICH Password.
2. In the Current Password field, enter your current Kerberos password.
3. In the New Password field, enter a new password. and press the <tab> key.
4. Retype the new password in the Retype New Password field and press the <tab> key.
5. Click Submit. If you enter an acceptable new password the same twice, the password will be changed.
6. Once you have successfully changed your password, you will be asked leave a hint to help you remember your password and to select a challenge option. Enter your hint and your challenge question and answer and click Save and Continue.
7. After you have successfully completed this, click Logout.

Option 2: Change Password through SIS (Students and Faculty Only)

This works for if you don’t currently know your Kerberos Password.

1. Login to SIS, click on Personal Information.
2. Click My Campus Computer Account.
3. Click on Change Ann Arbor (Kerberos) Password.
4. Click Create Temporary Password
5. Write down or the password provided including all special characters at the beginning or end of the password.
6. Click on Ann Arbor’s Password Change Page.
7. At the prompt enter your uniqname and current Kerberos password (the new one that you just generated) and then click the Log In button.

Type your current Ann Arbor password – it is case-sensitive

1. Click the link Change Your UMICH Password.
2. In the Current Password field, enter your current Kerberos password (the one you created and wrote down or copy and pasted).
3. In the New Password field, enter a new password. and press the <tab> key.
4. Retype the new password in the Retype New Password field and press the <tab> key.
5. Click Submit. If you enter an acceptable new password the same twice, the password will be changed.
6. Once you have successfully changed your password, you will be asked leave a hint to help you remember your password and to select a challenge option. Enter your hint and your challenge question and answer and click Save and Continue.
7. After you have successfully completed this, click Logout.

Option 3: Contact the ITS Helpdesk for Assistance

This works for if you don’t currently know your Kerberos Password.

• Call the Helpdesk at 810-762-3123 or visit them in person in 206 MSB
• The Helpdesk will be required to verify ID before changing any password.  Please be prepared to show photo ID in person or answer a series of questions for phone verification.

Users are required to appear in person at one of the three ITS Helpdesk locations with photo ID for password changes. In the event a user is unable to come to campus (i.e. user is a NetPlus! Student) as long as there is not a red flag on the account, then the Helpdesk will do the following:

1. Identity Verification
2. There are two available options for finishing the ID verification process
   1. Verify two (2) Security Questions – if we cannot verify both questions the Helpdesk will be required to call the client back.
   2. Call the Client – After verifying the ID the Helpdesk will then call the client at one of the phone numbers on file in Banner of UM Emergency Alerts with the users permission. The Helpdesk staff MUST call the client at a number on file with the university.
3. Changing the password – The Helpdesk will then change the password to a random password which the user must change at their first login.

In the event the information on file with the University for the user is not up-to-date, the user will need to update the information in SIS, with the office of the Registrar, or Human Resources before the Helpdesk can change the password.

In the event that the user has a red flag on their account the Helpdesk will need to see the user in person with two forms of valid photo ID before any changes can be made with the account.

Only students can update this information by accessing SIS. Students may contact the Helpdesk if they need assistance with this. Faculty and staff can contact University Human Resources to update their contact information.

NOTE: ITS recommends that all students, faculty, and staff update their information in the UM Emergency Alert system. For information on how to do this, please visit the following website: http://www.umflint.edu/emergency/. ITS also recommends that people who travel often add a mobile phone number to their personal information in Banner, with Human Resources, or in the UM Emergency Alert System.

• As a student or employee of the University of Michigan-Flint, you are required to use a number of passwords in order to access various computing services. It can be difficult to keep these passwords straight, so this quicknote explains what each password is used for and who can help you with them.

Never let anyone else login with your account

LAN Password

• This is the most commonly used password on our campus.
• LAN stands for Local Area Network. Please review the Technology policies and guidelines at http://www.umflint.edu/its/policies/home.page.

The LAN password is used in the following situations:

• Logging into any computer on campus.
• Accessing email: Webmail http://email.umflint.edu.
• Logging into Blackboard for online classes: http://bb.umflint.edu.
• Logging into SIS for course registration, grades, financial aide, and transcripts: https://sis.umflint.edu
• Logging into to the Wireless from a personal laptop.
• Using the Library Proxy Server to access library periodical or electronic reserves.
• LAN passwords are not used for the Mirlyn or Inter Library Loan program please contact the library for assistance with logging into these programs.

If students, faculty, or staff have difficulty with their LAN password,  the Helpdesk is able to answer questions or change this password for you. **Photo ID will be required.**

Ann Arbor (Kerberos) Password:

• This password is usually associated with any computing service involving our Ann Arbor campus. Ann Arbor passwords can be referred to as Kerberos passwords; they are one and the same. It is used in the following situations:
  • Accessing and editing your U-M Online Directory entry.
  • Library resources including MIRLYN, MIRLYNweb, and the Inter Library Loan program.
  • Accessing M-Stores in Ann Arbor (employees only).
  • Other resources available on UM-Ann Arbor websites.
  • Any difficulties with Ann Arbor (Kerberos) passwords must be addressed in the Helpdesk. If you need do not know your current Ann Arbor (Kerberos) password, you must come to the Helpdesk in person with photo ID.

Banner Password (UM-Flint Faculty & Staff only):

• Programs such as Banner use their own passwords which do not have any connections to other services. This program is typically only used by faculty and staff.
• An Access Request from and training for Banner must be completed before access can be granted to the banner system.  The training can be found at: http://www.umflint.edu/its/services/home.page?#Banner.
• Banner: Initial ID is your uniqname. You will receive an email within 2-3 days after completing the training notifying you on where to go to get your Banner password. When going to pick up your banner password please be sure to bring a photo ID.
• For help with your banner password you can contact the ITS Helpdesk at 810-766-6804.

Secure passwords are needed for all university password services: LAN and Kerberos.  This quicknote will assist in creating a secure password.

We have also found a website that discusses secure passwords that might be helpful to review if you are having difficulty setting your password. The information on this site is provided by Microsoft.  http://www.microsoft.com/protect/fraud/passwords/create.aspx

General Guidelines

Ann Arbor has recently changed their criteria for creating a secure password for your Kerberos or LAN account.  The following are the general restrictions:

• Use 12 or more characters
• Do NOT use plain dictionary words
• Do NOT use personal information or your uniqname
• Include all of the following categories:
  • Lowercase letters
  • Uppercase letters
  • Numerals
  • Punctuation (? . !)

Prohibited Passwords

The university has very strict password restriction policies.  These policies are in place to keep your information as secure as possible.  The following passwords or password segments are restricted when setting your LAN or Kerberos Password.

It is also advisable to avoid any password with personal information:

• Birthdate, name, home town, or mother’s maiden name
• Childhood nickname, pet’s name, or favorite cartoon character
• Driver’s License, phone, address, license plate, social security number, or PIN numbers

Password Creation Methods

It is always suggested that the longer and more cryptic the password is better, however at times these passwords are hard to remember.  A solution to this problem is to scramble the lettering of passwords with a combination of letters/symbols/numbers.

Common Letter/Symbol/Number Variations

Some variations have overlapping symbols/numbers/letters.  It is entirely up to you as to which variation you wish to use for your passwords, but keep in mind that these are suggestions.  Feel free to use your own variations for your passwords
