Using Microsoft Office Communicator
How to Install Office Communicator:
On-Campus Computers (School or Department owned)
- To install Live Communicator, open the ITS Recommended Software folder located at L:\ITS Recommended Applications
- Click the Office Live Communicator folder.
- Double-click on the Communicator Icon to start installing Live Communicator.
- Click Yes on the prompt to install.
- Click Next to advance through the wizard.
Off-Campus Computers (Student machines and Non-Domain Machines)
- In a internet browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, etc) navigate to https://vpn.umflint.edu
- Login using your uniqname and LAN password
- Click on the L: Drive (PCPub)
- Click ITS Recommended Applications
- Place a check next to the folder entitled Office Live Communicator.
- Click Download
- Create a name for the Zip Archive folder, communicator is a good name
- Click Download
- Look in your downloads folder for the Zip file once the download is complete.
- Double Click on the folder called Office Live Communicator
- Double-click on the Communicator Icon to start installing Live Communicator.
- Click Run on the prompt to install.
- Click Next to advance through the wizard.
How to Open Office Communicator in Windows Vista and Windows 7
To use communicator off-campus (from your home) you will need to be connected to the VPN via Network Connect. For directions on using the VPN and the Network Connect function please reference the quicknote entitled “How to Access and Use the VPN at UM-Flint” found in the Networking and Collaboration category.
- Click the Start Orb in the bottom left corner
- Type Microsoft Communicator
- Click the Microsoft Communicator Icon
- In the box that pops up type your uniqname@umflint.edu
- Click Ok
The first time you use Microsoft Communicator if you are off-campus you may receive an error when trying to connect. Please follow the steps below to correct this error.
- Open Microsoft Communicator
- Before clicking sign-in Click Actions in the menu bar
- Click Options
- Click Accounts
- Click Advanced, found next to Sign-in Name
- Click Configure Settings
- For Server Name or IP Address type: its-lcsproxy.umflint.edu
- Make sure Connect using TLS is selected.
- Click OK to both open windows
- Click Sign-in, you may be prompted for your LAN password again.
You will now see the main communicator window where all of your contacts will be shown.
Add a Contact
If you know the users Full U of M – Flint E-mail Address:
- Place your cursor into the field next to “Find” and Click in the box
- Type the persons full U of M-Flint e-mail address (uniqname@umflint.edu)
- In the box below where you typed their e-mail address their name and information should show up
- Right-click the Users Information
- Click Add to Contact List
This person will now be listed under contacts.
If you do not know the person’s Full U of M – Flint E-mail Address
- Click Contacts (Found at the top of the window)
- Click Add a Contact
- Select Search for a Contact
- Click Next
- Type in either just the persons last name or both their first and last name
- Click Next
- Highlight the person you would like to add by clicking their name once
- Click Next
- You may now Click Back to add another contact or Click Cancel to leave this window.
To Send a Message
- Double click the name of the contact you would like to send a message to.
- Place your cursor into the bottom white square (below Font and Save As) and Click once.
- Type your message into this box
- To send the message Press Enter on the keyboard or Click Send
Adding Another Person to your Conversation
To enclude more than two people in the conversation
- Click the icon in the top left of the dialogue box (A person with a plus sign)
- Select the person you would like to add to the conversation by clicking their name
- Click Ok
The additional person should now be added into the conversation and will be able to communicate with anyone in this conversation.
Keep in mind that the new person will not be able to see any of the conversation prior to him/her being added into the conversation.
