Internship Guidelines

Before you Begin

Required Reading
In order to familiarize the intern with basic methodology and to place the activities in historical context, each intern will be assigned a short reading list. You should obtain this reading list and complete it before the internship.

Paperwork
Each intern must complete paperwork required by the university before they begin at their internship site. All paper work should be completed as soon as possible and must be completed in the semester prior to the start of the internship. These forms can be obtained by making an appointment with History Department administrative personnel. In addition, students should complete the intern agreement and turn it in the their faculty supervisor. The intern agreement can be obtained from the History Department Website.

During the Internship

Documentation of Internship Experiences
When you complete your internship, you will be required to produce a reflective statement. Throughout the process you should document your experiences. Plan to keep a blog of your work duties and experiences. Make sure you take the time to reflect on what types of skills and knowledge you are using to complete your tasks.Consider taking photographs where appropriate, keeping copies of important documents, etc.

Meetings with the Agency Supervisor
Make arrangements with your agency supervisors to check in two times during your internship. Foremost, you should ask for feedback on your performance. Use this as an opportunity to keep your supervisor apprised of your work, and any issues, questions, or challenges that might arise. Be sure to ask your supervisor to keep you in mind for any kind of meetings or museum‐wide experiences in which you can take part.

Meetings with the Faculty Advisor
The student should contact the faculty advisor at least two times regarding the studentʹs progress and activities. The student may ask to meet with the advisor more often if desired or necessary. Use this as a time to talk about more of your learning experiences, resources that might support your work, or if necessary, troubleshooting problems that may come about.

Completing your Internship

Internship Reflective Statement

To complete your internship you will write a reflective statement. This documents serve as an official summary of your experiences to address how your thinking and practice have changed as a result of your experiences.

The reflective statement will ask you to reflect on your experience and discuss the types of activities in which you were engaged and the specific skills and knowledge you used.

 

What Organizations Can Expect from University of Michigan-Flint History Interns

The internship experience is an opportunity for students to work in a professional environment and gain concrete skills about a profession in public history. It is also an extension of the classroom. Therefore University of Michigan Flint Public History Interns are required to follow practices that will help them develop good work habits and cultivate a broader knowledge of the field of public history. In order to meet those objective interns must complete a combination of requirements listed below.

Interns are expected to arrive on time and complete their scheduled tasks in a professional manner.

Interns are expected to participate in all individual or group meetings and associated learning activities.

Interns are expected to provide personal transportation to and from the internship site.

Each intern is expected to schedule two performance reviews with their organization’s supervisor. The first review should be scheduled after 25 hours of work. The second review should be scheduled after 90 hours

Each intern is expected to complete a reading list provided by their faculty supervisor. The reading list should be completed before completing 25 hours of work.  It is the responsibility of the intern to notify their organization supervisor and faculty supervisor when those readings are complete.

Each intern is expected to keep a journal that documents their experience. It is not intended to be just a diary of what one does each week. It should also be a summary of the significant learning that takes place. It is the responsibility of the intern to produce the journal on demand and bring that journal to reviews with their organization and faculty supervisor.

Each intern is expected to complete an assignment designed to assess the learning outcomes developed for the internship. It is the responsibility of the intern to inform their faculty and organization supervisor that they have completed 80 hours and are ready to work on the assignment. The assignment is due before the end of the semester.

Since the interns are representatives of the University of Michigan-Flint History Department and the organizations at which they complete their activities, the intern will make themselves available for public relations opportunities designed to promote the internship program, University of Michigan-Flint, or the organization at which they completed their internship. Further, the intern understands that these type of opportunities will arise AFTER they have completed their internship

Intern Termination Procedures

University of Michigan-Flint Public History Interns are subject to termination if, at any time during the internship, either the organization or faculty supervisor determines that the intern is not fulfilling their responsibilities. The first step in addressing an intern’s failure to comply with the responsibilities of the program or their organization is corrective. Interns will be notified of inappropriate workplace behavior/conduct or producing insufficient work by their organization supervisor or faculty supervisor. This notification can take place during the regularly scheduled reviews or at any time during the internship. The second step, if the intern fails to, adequately, correct their behavior or work is termination. Termination may be initiated by the organization supervisor or faculty supervisor. Terminated interns will also have a report placed in their assessment file. It should also be understood that terminated interns will not receive letters of recommendation from Department of History faculty or their organization supervisor.
