HONORS 393 FOR SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS AND SENIORS
All sophomores, juniors, and seniors are required to attend a one-credit course HON 393 that meets once a week during the semester with the honors director. This course is designed to guide you through all phases of the off-campus study from the finding of contacts and the writing of the proposal to the completion of your honors thesis.
Requirements for all phases of this course
• A view binder with 8-10 tabs to organize your search, your proposal, and your thesis
• Your honors election notebook with 6 tabs and records of honors elections
• An updated resume
• An updated scholarship letter
Registering for HON 393
• Honors 393 is a one-credit independent study course
• You may fulfill requirements by registering for one credit of the course for each semester during which you take the course
• If you have too many credits in a semester, you may fulfill requirements by attending the course meetings once a week and without being registered in the course

Attendance in this class is required in order to be eligible for your off-campus stipend.
Course Objectives:
- to apply to the department or school of your major to be accepted into the Junior/Senior level honors program.
- to work closely with the honors director and your departmental advisor while exploring your options for an off-campus site
- to update your resume and develop a cover letter for your search
- to track your honors elections to make sure that you have the required number in order to receive your off-campus stipend
- to begin a tentative search with the expectation of finding a site by later summer or fall
- to do research in your area(s) of interest in order to have a better understanding of possible off-campus projects
HONORS 393 FOR JUNIORS
Attendance in this class is required in order to be eligible for your off-campus stipend.
Course Objectives:
- to work closely with the honors director in order to complete all requirements for the off-campus study semester
- to work closely with your departmental advisor while completing drafts of your proposal
- to complete all parts of the proposal
- to understand and complete all forms
- to become fully acquainted with your off-campus site in as many ways as possible
- to understand issues of travel safety
HONORS 393 FOR SENIORS
Attendance in this class is required in order to receive an adequate grade and guidance for your thesis.
The following are the objectives of this course:
- to begin or to continue work on your thesis
- to work closely with your departmental advisor on the drafts of the thesis
- to complete all technical aspects of the thesis including the cover page, signature page, bibliography, abstract and a rough draft of at least some of the chapters
- to complete a conference paper based on your off-campus research for the Michigan Academy, the Meeting of the Minds, or other professional conference
