Mission and Values
MISSION STATEMENT
Housing and Residential Life at the University of Michigan-Flint is fully dedicated to the creation of a learning-centered community where inclusiveness, academic excellence, personal growth, and the free exchange of divergent ideas are highly valued. Student residents are encouraged to actively shape their community and are expected to balance individual and collective needs with civility and honesty. Our foundation is built upon a presumption of goodwill and the belief that mutual respect is a fundamental right of every human being.
Multicultural community building and commitment to diversity
We strive to have a community that values and celebrates each member. Our staff will strive to build a positive, multicultural community of respect and understanding. The staff will be trained to be responsive to any issues that occur in the hall and we will use dialogue as one tool to insure residents are talking with each other as they learn and grow in the community.
One of the key responsibilities of an RA is Community Building. Community Building means getting to know your residents and other staff members, both individually and collectively, by investing time and energy into activities and events that will help facilitate the development of positive and meaningful relationships. The Community Development Model is in place to assist staff with:
- Getting to know residents;
- Helping residents get to know each other;
- Assessing and addressing the needs of residents; and
- Encouraging residents to take ownership for the community.
