Regents Approve Student Housing RFP
November 2006
The University of Michigan Board of Regents, at the November 18 meeting, approved a request by the Flint campus to further explore the feasibility of student housing. UM-Flint will now issue a Request For Proposals (RFP) to four developers. The primary purpose of this phase is to determine the financial feasibility of the project and identify an acceptable student housing design concept.
"The importance of this step is that it brings the discussion of student housing to a new level of specificity," said Chancellor Juan E. Mestas. "Rather than speculate whether the project is financially feasible, we will be able to determine it from the proposals."
In March of 2004, UM-Flint issued a Request For Qualifications (RFQ) for campus student housing. The RFQ sought input from developers on construction and management of a student housing project of approximately 240 to 300 beds. From the developers who submitted qualifications, the selection was narrowed to four that were determined to best meet the needs of the University.
A student housing committee will evaluate the proposals submitted in response to the RFP and will make a recommendation to Chancellor Juan E. Mestas in February-March, 2005. The issuing of the RFP does not imply that the university has decided to build student housing at UM-Flint. It means that the University is seriously considering that possibility.
The University reserves the right to reject any or all proposals as its interests may require.
