Resources for Settling In

So you have finally made it to campus! What happens next? We have put together some resources to help you settle into your new home and get acquainted with the residence hall.

WELCOME WEEK

What events are going on around campus?

There are several events during welcome week. A few of the highlights include New Student Convocation, Floor Community Meetings, Hall Community Meeting, Movie-On-The-Lawn, A Taste of Downtown, Comedy Explosion, Cake Race, Picnic, and the Cultural Center Invasion. Check your welcome week pamphlet when you get to campus for details.

UNLOADING

What if I need help moving in?

To assist you in the move in process we have a large number of volunteers. They will be available to help unload your vehicles and get your belongings to your suite/room. Though we have helpers it is still the responsibility of the resident and their family to unpack their belongings and set up their suite/room.

Is there a place to recycle in the residence hall?

The residence hall will have a recycling area for your convenience. During move in there will be a volunteer to help collect and sort the large amount of recyclable materials generated by this busy time of year.

COMPUTERS

Should I bring a computer?

It is nice to have your own computer, but it is not mandatory. There are several computer labs around campus for students to use.

How can I make sure my computer is safe?

There will be an “inoculation station” located in the residence hall where you can bring your computer to have it inspected by an Information Technology Services employee.

Is the residence hall wireless?

Yes.

Where can I print?

There will be a print station located in the residence hall. Residents can send documents to this print station from their residence hall suite or anywhere on campus and then go there to finish the printing process.

ROOMMATE/SUITEMATES

How should I set up ground rules with my suitemates/roommate?

Housing and Residential Life will provide you with a workbook that helps set up expectations with your suite/roommates. If you need help with the work book or some advice on living with suite/roommates you can ask your Resident Advisor.

I went to my roommate/suitemates Facebook page and I don’t want to live with them. What should I do?

Wow, you didn’t even meet them yet. Why don’t you try talking to them and seeing how it goes. It may be better than you think and you may even learn something from someone who is different than you. Remember…Housing and Residential Life will not approve a room change if you want to move based on your roommate/suitemates identity (race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.)

What if my roommate/suitemates and I don’t get along?

First of all you should talk to them about it. If that doesn’t work your Resident Advisors and Hall Director will be trained in conflict mediation. If you can’t work it out then you can get on the waiting list for a new room. Also if there is someone that wants to switch rooms with you and both parties are in agreement then you can go to the Housing and Residential Life Office to request a formal room swap. Check the “Resident’s Guide to Community Living” for more details on these processes.

What rights and responsibilities do I have when living with my roommate/suitemates?

You should check out “Resident’s Guide to Community Living”. This document will help you understand your rights and responsibilities. If you have any questions you can ask your Resident Advisor or call the Housing and Residential Life Office at (810) 237-6571.

POLICIES

Can I have guests?

Sure. You can have guests in the building, but they must have identification and be signed in at the front desk. You must also make sure it is ok with your roommates before bringing guests to the suite. Check the “Resident’s Guide to Community Living” for more details on the guest policy.

Do residence halls have curfews?

No.

Can I bring my pet?

The only pet you can bring is your fish, but please leave your piranha at home. Check the “Resident’s Guide to Community Living” for more details.

Can I smoke in my suite/room?

The residence hall is smoke free.

Can I drink alcohol in my suite/room?

The residence hall is alcohol free. Even guests who are 21 are not allowed to bring alcohol in the building.

FRONT DESK

What services does the front desk provide?

The front desk will be available 24 hours a day to answer questions and provide general housing services. They will have a package pick up system, handle all mail, make keys for those individuals that are locked out of their room, order replacement mailbox keys, process room changes, check out vacuums, etc.

What if I get locked out?

If you get locked out of your suite or room you can go to the front desk and they can make a temporary key. If you get locked out of the building you can use the phone located by the front door to call the front desk so they can give you access to the building.
