Expedited Process

Research involving any of the following may qualify for Expedited Review:

  • No use of deception
  • No study of minor children, prisoners, pregnant women, impaired adults
  • No study of illegal activities like drug use
  • No study of private activities like sexual behavior

If the research does not meet the above criteria, it may be referred for review by the convened (full) board or assessed to determine if it qualifies for exemption from ongoing review and approval.

If the research qualifies for expedited review, it will be examined by an expediting reviewer. Expedited reviews are conducted weekly on a "rolling" basis as applications are submitted. Once all required documents are received, the expediting reviewer will examine your application and issue a decision.

Additional Information Requested: If the expediting reviewer requires clarification, additional information, or revisions to your application you will be notified by a system email through the eResearch system. Each request is noted as an open issue in the system. You must respond to all open issues before the expediting reviewer will review your application again and issue a decision.
Approved: You will receive an eresearch system email notification when the decision is entered into our system. Do not respond directly to the system emails, insteasd use the "post correspondence" feature in eResearch.

NOTE: Research, including subject pre-screening and/or subject recruitment may not begin until formal approval is issued by the IRB.

The approval period for expeditable research is usually one year (exceptions may apply). Federal regulations require that the IRB conduct a continuing review of human subject research at least once per year. Several months prior to the approval expiration date, the IRB will issue reminder notices outlining the steps necessary to submit an application for scheduled continuing review. Subject recruitment, data collection, or data analysis without continuing IRB approval is prohibited past the expiration date assigned by the IRB.
