Admissions Information

Students may enroll in the English Language Program (ELP) to improve English language skills for personal or professional reasons. To enroll in the ELP, students must submit the following documents:

  1. ELP Application
  2. $20 Application Fee
  3. Copy of Passport
  4. Affidavit of Support
  5. Bank Statements
  6. Official Transcript (s)
  7. Test of English proficiency (optional)

All documents must be official, original documents or notarized, attested copies of the original. Copies, faxes, and scanned documents will not be accepted.

Conditional Admissions to UM-Flint
Students must enroll in the ELP to improve their English skills to meet the University of Michigan-Flint's language proficiency requirements. Students must submit the following documents:
  1. ELP Application
  2. Undergraduate Application
  3. Copy of Passport
  4. Affidavit of Support
  5. Bank Statements
  6. Official Transcript (s)
  7. Test of English proficiency (optional)

All documents must be official, original documents or notarized, attested copies of the original. Copies, faxes, and scanned documents will not be accepted.


The undergraduate and graduate programs use English proficiency test scores to determine a student’s eligibility for entrance into the University. Students who do not have a recent TOEFL score or who do not meet the language proficiency requirement may be conditionally admitted. Students who are not citizens from countries on this  list are required to show proof of English proficiency.

Graduate (Masters) Language Requirements

84 (Internet-based; minimum of 23 in reading, 23 in listening, 15 in speaking, 21 in writing)
560 (Paper-based; minimum of 56 in each section)

MELAB 80 (minimum of 80 in each section)

OR

  • An official transcript showing one of the following: a degree earned at an accredited U.S.  college or university
OR
  • A degree earned at a foreign institution where the primary language of instruction was English
OR
  • Successful completion (‘C’ or higher) of ENG 111 or ENG 112 or its equivalent


Undergraduate students who do not meet the English requirements MUST submit a separate application to the ELP to be considered for conditional admittance to an undergraduate program.

Graduate students who do not meet the English requirements but are otherwise admissible will be automatically enrolled in the ELP.

Language Proficiency Exam
Upon arrival, students are required to take the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) exam. The MELAB is accepted as evidence of English language proficiency for admissions purpose by universities in the United States.

Students who do not arrive in time to take the MELAB or students who do not meet the required proficiency score will take an English placement test on the first day of class. This test will determine level placement in the ELP.

The MELAB is repeated near the end of each semester.
