International Student Organization

The International Student Organization (ISO) has grown from humble beginnings to one of the largest student organizations at UM-Flint.  Every international student is included upon arrival and is actively encouraged to become an involved member of the ISO.  The presence of the organization has allowed students, international and domestic, the valuable opportunity to establish many frienships while experiencing a variety of cultures and traditions from around the world.

ISO is active around the UM-Flint campus.  In addition to biweekly meetings, the ISO has a full calendar of social activities and volunteer opportunities, both on- and off-campus.  With the support of the International Student Center, the ISO is involved in several campus programs throughout the academic year.

Recent events of the International Student Organization include:

  • International Education Week
  • Road Trip to Cedar Point Amusement Park
  • Labor Day picnic at Seven Lakes Park
  • White T-shirt Barbecues
  • University of Michigan football games
  • Excursions to Chicago, New York or Mackinaw Island, MI
The group offers help and support to each other.  Friendships are formed; resource information is shared. Birthdays, holidays and special occasions are celebrated.   Lasting networks are formed because of student involvement in the ISO.

In the winter of 2000, Isabela Lalinde founded the ISO, at the time an international student from Colombia, South America.   After her graduation, she continues to be involved with the ISO Alumni Chapter.

Mission Statement

“To create awareness of other cultures and bring the International Students closer together within the UM-Flint student body and the greater Flint community.”
