Course Description
The Dominican Republic Medical Mission is a collaborative program between the Department of Nursing at UM-Flint and the Mid-west Medical Mission based in Toledo, Ohio. This program provides an opportunity for UM-Flint Nursing students to work with faculty and health care professionals as part of the Midwest Medial Mission team in a hospital in the Dominican Republic.
This course promotes the respect and understanding of human and cultural diversity, contributes to educating students in an environment that emphasizes critical thinking and humanistic and scientific inquiry, and provides opportunities to collaborate with local and regional health care institutions to collaborate with local and regional health care institutions from a different culture in the provision of health care.

Dominican Republic Profile
The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola. It shares the island with Haiti and is located between the Caribbean and the Atlantic Ocean. The Dominican Republic is the largest economy in the Central American and Caribbean region although there is a stark contrast between wealth and poverty, modernity and antiquity, rural and agricultural regions, and crowed cities, mountainous vistas and crowded beaches. The Dominican people are a mixture of cultures woven together with many traditions, strengths, and spit in the face of poverty.

Faculty
Professor Maureen Tippen is a professor from the Department of Nursing. She has had previous experience in travel abroad courses with students to the Dominican Republic for the past 13 years, Peru in 2003, Cambodia in 2008, and Kenya in 2009.

Eligibility
Students must have completed NUR 335 by the end of Fall 2009 or hold an RN license or BSN degree. Participation is limited to three students upon consent of faculty, references, and interview with faculty for selection.

*Estimates subject to change based currency exchange rates. It is the student’s responsibility to secure airfare.


Application Deadline
Application must be submitted with a $100 non-refundable deposit to the Office of Study Abroad. Application deadline is December 18, 2009.

Cancelations & Refunds
The remainder of the program cost is due on February 26, 2010. There will be no refunds after February 26, 2010.

Any withdrawal must be done in writing and submitted to the Office of Study Abroad.
