The primary objective of this course if to provide an opportunity for students to gain considerable knowledge of theatre and art in England. They will have first-hand exposure to plays in production, backstage tours, and guest lectures. Secondary objectives will be to increase a student’s knowledge of cultural and artistic resources of London.
The course will include lectures and reading of British theatre history, tickets to ten plays, two back-stage tours to the New Globe Theatre and the National Theatre, excursion to Stratford with tours of the Historic Properties, guest lectures by actors, directors or critics in London, class sessions led by UM-Flint faculty on background, and discussions.
London Profile
London is an amazing place as it is an international center of culture in terms of arts, music, festivals, museums and much more. The diversity of cultures within London is so great that easy definition is impossible. The city is home to more than 300 nationalities that have over time molded and shaped the city's culture into what it is today.
London, as the capital of England and of the United Kingdom, and is the largest metropolitan area in the European Union. An important settlement for two millennia, London's history goes back to its founding by the Romans. Since its beginnings, London has been part of movements and phenomena, such as the English Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, and the Gothic Revival in architecture.
The city of London is a learning experience itself and students will become familiar with this major metropolitan area.
Course Profile
This is a 3 credit course open to all students. The course is being offered in the Spring 2010 term. Students can register for this course as one of following courses:
INT 594—Special Topics in Study Abroad (graduate students in all majors)
INT 394— Special Topics in Study Abroad (undergraduate students in all majors)
Faculty Dr. Lauren Friesen is a professor of Theatre and Chair of the Theatre and Dance Department. Dr. Friesen has successfully led many study abroad programs to London since 1989 and has extensive knowledge of London and English theatre. Bill Irwin, assistant Professor of Theatre will also serve as an instructor. Mr. Irwin was a student on one of the previous London Theatre Courses.
Eligibility Open to all students, MBA, BBA, MPA, BA and BS students of all majors. There are no academic prerequisites or language requirements. Course has a limited enrollment of 20 students.

Cancelations & Refunds The remainder of the program cost is due on February 26, 2010. There will be no refunds after February 26, 2010.
Any withdrawal must be done in writing and submitted to the Office of Study Abroad.
