Letter from the ELP Coordinator

On behalf of the English Language Program (ELP), I would like to welcome you to the University of Michigan-Flint. The mission of the ELP is to provide high-quality English language instruction and academic preparation for students seeking admission to the University of Michigan-Flint degree programs and those who wish to improve their English proficiency for professional or personal reasons.

A great deal of your success at the University of Michigan-Flint depends on the successful completion of the ELP. I urge you to fully participate in your ELP coursework, cultural activities and field trip experiences that are part of building your English language proficiency.

The ELP is an intensive program and designed to advance your English skills in reading, vocabulary, writing, grammar, listening and speaking. It is to your advantage to communicate as much as possible in English; therefore, classes are taught entirely in English. Full time ELP students receive 20 hours per week of English and American culture instruction. The courses are taught by dedicated, TESOL trained instructors who have experience teaching and living abroad.

The following information is for you as a student participating in the program. You are encouraged to become familiar with the material in the handbook. Please read through the information carefully, take notes and allow us to answer any additional questions you may have. Our role in the ELP is to help you make the most of your University of Michigan-Flint experience through advising and education. Once again, I would like to extend a warm welcome and assure you and your family that our entire staff is committed to making your stay in Flint a rewarding and memorable experience.
