Course Descriptions
Their are three levels of the English Language Program. A description of each level and information regarding the movement between levels can be found here.
ELP 201 Listening & Speaking I
This course includes Oral Communication Skills I and Language Lab.
The purpose of this course is to prepare students to interact with classmates and teachers. This includes developing listening skills to comprehend short spoken passages as well as speaking skills to take part in conversations and deliver a short presentation on a familiar topic. In addition, students spend 2 ½ hours per week in the language lab to reinforce concepts studied in classes.
ELP 202 Reading & Writing I
This course includes Reading I, Writing I, and Grammar I.
The purpose of this course is to help students learn and practice fundamental reading skills and writing skills and learn strategies to improve comprehension and develop reading fluency, as well as writing skills to compose simple sentences in preparation for paragraph writing. Vocabulary development is accomplished in the context of the reading, writing, and listening & speaking courses.
ELP 301 Listening & Speaking II
This course includes Oral Communication Skills II and Language Lab.
The purpose of this course is to prepare Level II students to be active participants in academic classes. This includes developing listening skills to comprehend short spoken passages, note-taking skills to be successful note-takers in an academic lecture course, and speaking skills to deliver a short presentation or group presentation. In addition, students spend 2 ½ hours per week in the language lab to reinforce concepts studied in classes.
ELP 302 Reading & Writing II
This course includes Reading II, Writing II, and Grammar II.
The purpose of this course is to help students transition from fundamental reading skills and strategies to skills necessary to advance towards academic-level reading material. In addition, students begin to transition from fundamental writing skills to composing essays of various genres. Vocabulary development is accomplished in the context of the reading, writing, and listening & speaking courses.
ELP 401 Listening & Speaking III
This course includes Oral Communication Skills III and Language Lab.
The purpose of this course is to prepare students to be active participants in academic classes. This includes developing academic lecture listening skills, note-taking skills, and speaking skills to deliver an extended presentation. In addition, students spend 2 ½ hours per week in the language lab to reinforce concepts studied in classes.
ELP 402 Reading & Writing III
This course includes Reading III, Writing III, and Grammar III.
The purpose of this course is to provide students with the necessary skills and strategies to meet the demands of academic texts as well as writing academic compositions and research papers. Vocabulary development is accomplished in the context of the reading, writing, and listening & speaking courses.
Language Lab
The purpose of the lab is to use available technological resources to provide students of all proficiency levels with both faculty-led and self-paced activities to build their language skills in listening, vocabulary, grammar and reading. During lab time, students may work on textbook companion sites or specific activities designated by their instructor.
