What to do before you arrive.

STEP 1: APPLY AND BE ACCEPTED TO UM-FLINT

STEP 2: REGISTER FOR ORIENTATION 

  • Log in to http://my.umflint.edu
  • Click Account -> Login
  • Click New Student and enter your Uniqname
  • Answer the prompted questions
  • Click Submit
  • Create your LAN Password
  • Click Student Information System (SIS) and enter your Uniqname and LAN Password
  • Click New Students Menu or New Students Start Here tab
  • Click Register or Reschedule Orientation

STEP 3: OBTAIN YOUR STUDENT VISA

  • Pay $200 SEVIS fee online by visiting http://www.fmjfee.com
  • Set up an appointment at a US Consulate or Embassy to apply for the F-1 student visa
  • Bring your SEVIS fee receipt, UM-Flint admission letter, Form I-20, proof of financial support, and passport with you to your US Consulate appointment 

STEP 4: TAKE PLACEMENT EXAMS IF NEEDED

If required, placement exams for the English Language Program will be taken once you arrive at UM-Flint

STEP 5: LOG IN TO YOUR UM-FLINT EMAIL ACCOUNT

  • Log in here and enter your uniqname and password
  • Check your UM-Flint email account often for important information and updates from the university

STEP 6: SPEAK WITH YOUR ACADEMIC ADVISOR (MANDATORY)

  • Log in to SIS  
  • Click Student Services
  • Click Student Records
  • Click View Your Academic Advisor
    • Advising may be done via email and telephone

STEP 7: PLAN YOUR ARRIVAL

  • Check the term start dates for when you plan to attend
  • Plan on entering the United States no more than 30 days before the start date on your I-20
  • Purchase your flight tickets. The closest airport is Flint Bishop International Airport, airport code FNT. Other major airports include Detroit (DTW) and Chicago (CHI)
  • Give your flight information to the International Center as soon as you have it
  • If needed, arrange for pick-up service from the airport through the International Center 

STEP 8: REGISTER FOR CLASSES

Log in to the Student Information System (SIS) to register for courses online.

STEP 9: CHOOSE YOUR HOUSING
