Short-Term Programs

The University of Michigan-Flint's English Language Program is proud to offer several options for improving your English skills. We recognize that everyone comes to the English Language Program with different skill levels. That is why we offer a variety of 2-7 week customizable programs for a minimum group of 10 or more, designed to meet the need of each individual student.

Program cost includes:

  • Airport Pick-up/Drop-off: Transportation upon arrival and departure from Flint Bishop airport
  • Welcome Orientation: Information regarding the program, campus tour, and university policies will be provided
  • Housing: Students will experience residential life similar to that of American university students
  • Meals: A meal plan will be provided
  • Study Materials: Necessary materials will be provided by the program
  • Tailored English Courses: English courses will be customized based on the program of choice and level of English
  • Basic Cultural Excursions: Trips will be arranged for students to connect with the community and learn about the American culture. Some favorite excursions and activities are: skiing, Thanksgiving meal, movie and theater nights, Halloween parties, bowling, sports games, ice skating, and visits to Michigan's cities like Detroit, Lansing, Frankenmuth, Makinac Island, etc.

Academic English

This program will prepare you for undergraduate or graduate studies by developing the reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills for rigorous academic studies.

Corporate English (Business and Management)

This course is designed for students who are either at an early stage in their careers or students who have not yet started working. The aim of the course is to give you a good general knowledge and understanding of the use of English in business situations.

  • Build your general and business vocabulary
  • Develop your communication skills in English and specialized English language knowledge
  • Visit businesses and corporations
  • Participate in a networking event and have lunch with a member of the local business community
  • Observe UM-Flint business and management lectures and seminars
  • Immerse yourself in American culture

English and Teaching Methods for English Teachers

We provide professional development for teachers who are teaching English as a foreign language or teaching content in English. We design curriculum to accomodate various needs for pre-service and in-service teachers: elementary school teachers who want fresh ideas for songs and games, professors who lecture in English, students who wish to pursue studies in education in English, or experienced teachers looking language refresher courses specially designed for them.

This program is designed for students who would like to use English more confidently in the fields of science and technology. The aim of the program is to help develop critical thinking, intercultural communication, oral presentation and professional skills.

  • Develop specialized English language knowledge for STEM professionals
  • Visit business community partners and a research center
  • Observe university lectures and seminars

English for Health Sciences (Medical Professionals)

This program is designed for students who would like to use English more confidently in the fields of health sciences. The aim of the program is to help develop critical thinking, intercultural communication, oral presentaion and professional skills.

  • Engage in English for health sciences
  • Build your general and medical vocabulary and specialized English language knowledge
  • Develop your cross-cultural communication skills in English
  • Visit a local hospital, health clinic, labs and a research center
  • Observe UM-Flint health sciences lectures and seminars
