A: Family members who are not the children or spouse of the F-1 student or J-1 exchange visitor must apply for a B-1/B-2 visitor visa to gain entry into the U.S. Family members from certain countries may be eligible to travel to the U.S. to visit for stays of up to 90 days without obtaining a B-1/B-2 visa through the U.S. Department of State Visa Waiver Program. A: If you have insurance that is comparable to the UM-Flint International Student/Scholar Health Insurance (IHI), you can request a waiver of the health insurance requirement. If you plan to purchase insurance, please make sure your policy will meet these standards before you purchase it as many policies do not meet these requirements. Also, please remember that the IHI plan changes from time to time and so do the requirements for the approval of insurance waivers. Therefore, insurance that was acceptable in prior years may not be acceptable this year. Click here for more information.
A: International students are eligible to work on-campus up to 20 hours while attending classes. UM-Flint offers off-campus employment options with our Optional Practical Training (OPT) and Curricular Practical Training (CPT), additional inforamtion can be found here.
