Edward traveled to Taiwan for 3 weeks as part of the 2011 Taiwan UM-Flint faculty-led program led by Dr. Jacob Peng. Here is a reflection of his experience:
We spent 3 weeks in Taiwan visiting businesses, universities, and studying East Asian culture. Professor Peng was amazing. He is from Taiwan and his knowledge and patience made the trip remarkable.
Which experience had the most impact on your personally?
All. It was the most amazing and educational 3 weeks of my life.
What were your expectations of the trip? How did your experience differ from your expectations?
I wasn't sure what to expect. I was very pleased with what I experienced.
What was the biggest difference in culture that you experienced while a abroad?
Very rich and deep culture and history. The people were very humble and proper. They also seemed to care more about other people and the group rather than themselves. Westerners in contrasts are much more individualistic and arrogant.
What surprised you the most about your time abroad?
The people. They were so humble, hospitable, and friendly. They loved us.
How has this experience changed you?
I am much more understanding and humble. My eyes have been opened to several new things and ideas. It was truly a life changing experience. I really feel that I am a better person because of my experience in Asia.
Would you recommend this program to other students?
Yes, yes, yes!
