Protect What You Collect!!!
- Encrypt Personal Data
- Learn how to encrypt emails here at UM-Flint by using the following links

- Passwords
- Use strong passwords. Strong passwords contain a mix of capitol letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
- The stronger your password the less often you need to change your password.
- Don't mix personal passwords and work related passwords.
- Don't have the same password for facebook, personal banking, and your school account.
- Protect Your Physical Devices (Laptops, PDA's, thumb drives, etc)
- Password protect devices when you can
- Encrypt sensitive information on your physical devices
- Lock away or shred printed documents that contain personal information
- Practice Responsible Computing
- Take caution when using peer to peer file sharing applications as you could unknowingly be sharing documents or data from your computer with unknown applications on the web.
- Locking Your Computer
- ALWAYS lock your computer when you walk away from it.
- If you don't have the ability to lock your computer than save your data and logoff. Never leave your information available for others to access.
Lost or Stolen University or Personal Data
IMMEDIATELY contact the Department of Public Safety at 810-762-3335:
If your university-issued or personal cell phone or laptop is lost or stolen
If media or documents are lost or stolen that contains sensitive/protected information.
- Examples of "Media":
- PDA
- Flash Drive
- CD
- DVD
- Portable Hard Drives
- SD Cards
- Floppy Disks
- Zip Drives
- etc.
Now, think about the contents of your lost or stolen equipment, media, or documents.
Did any media contain personal sensitive data?
Did the media contain student or patient personal data?
Were passwords stored on your computer?
As you think about this, make a list of the contents to refer to in the next step.
- Examples of Sensitive/Protected Information:
- Passwords
- Student Grades
- Addresses
- Birthdates
- Social Security Numbers
- Student ID Numbers
- etc.
Look though your list and determine your next step…
What passwords need to be changed? Who should be contacted?
If your laptop, phone, media, or documents contain any of the sensitive information listed above or other information viewed as sensitive or protected information, please contact DPS and ITS IMMEDIATELY.
If you have passwords saved on your laptop or phone, please follow the steps below to change ALL of your passwords as soon as possible. If you have any questions or run into any problems, please contact the ITS HelpDesk for assistance at 810-766-6804:

Compromised Personal Private Data
IMMEDIATELY contact the ITS HelpDesk 810-766-6804:
If your university-issued or personal computer containing personal private data is believed to be compromised by spyware, malware, or a virus.
- Signs That Your Computer May Be Infected:
- A large number of pop-ups is appearing continuously
- You are receiving “virus detected” notifications from your virus protection program,
- Your homepage on your Internet browser was reset without your input
- There is an extreme change in the running/response time of your machine
- There are notifications from programs that you did not install, etc.
If you believe that your computer is infected by spyware, malware, or a virus contact the ITS HelpDesk and then disable the network connection. If at all possible, DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER. However, DO NOT continue to use the machine if you believe it to be infected.

Outside of normal business hours for the ITS HelpDesk, please contact the Department of Public Safety at 810-762-3335 if you suspect your university-issued or personal computer containing personal private data is infected. DPS will contact the on-call ITS member to assist you further.
