Using a Windows Machine in the ITS Computer Labs

Quicknote #10

January 2008

 

Introduction:

This Quicknote is intended to serve as an elementary guide to the

Windows computers in the ITS Student Computer Labs. It will

acquaint you with such topics as: how to correctly login and logout

of a computer, how to print using the Self-Service Print Stations,

how to save and access your files on your H: drive.

Login Procedure:

1.    Hold down Ctrl + Alt + Del.

2.    A Dialog box Log On to Windows appears.

3.    In the Username: field, type your uniqname.

4.    In the Password: field, type your LAN password.

5.    Make sure FLINT-NT is selected in the Log on to field.

6.    Click the OK button.

**Note: Typing your password incorrectly multiple times will lock your account.

Accessing Progdata:

To access Progdata from the computers in the ITS Open Computer Labs, just double-click on the Progdata

folder on the desktop. Or you can open your web browser (i.e. Internet Explorer or Netscape) and type in

\\deptdrive\progdata\. If you are a student and would like more information on Progdata, see Quicknote #22 . Or if you are a faculty/staff member and would like more information, see Quicknote #23.

Using Your Home Directory (H: drive):

All students have been allocated 50MB of file space on the Student server. The space is located in the Home/Personal Directory.  For more information about your Personal Directory, see the What is the Personal Directory? Flyer.

To Save to the H:Drive:

Within your program, go to File. Click Save As. . . Change the drive to H:\ (Drive containing your uniqname.)

To Access the H:Drive:

Within your program, go to File. Click Open. . . Change the drive to H:\

-OR-

Double-click on My Computer icon. Then, double-click on the drive containing your uniqname (H:)

Printing:

The computer labs use a method of Self-Service Printing. When you print a file, it goes into a queue on the network. Then, when you are ready to pick up your printouts, you simply go to the printer workstation, select your job, and click Print.

At your computer
Within your program, go to File. Click Print. . .

At the Print Station

Now you will be prompted to login.

1.      In the Logon ID field, type your uniqname.

2.      In the Password field, type your LAN password.

3.      Then click the Log On button.

You will see the name of your job under the title, Job Name.

1.      Click on your print job once to highlight it.

2.      Click the Print button to print the highlighted job or click the Delete button to delete it from the queue.

**Note:  Print jobs stay in the queue up to 4 hours.

 

 

Logout and Shutdown:

Always restart the computer before leaving.  Do NOT simply turn off the computer!  Doing so will lock out your account.  First, close all open applications

To Shutdown

1.      Click the  button and click Shut Down.

2.      On the Shut Down Windows screen, select Restart and click OK..
