Using a Macintosh in the ITS Computer Labs |

Introduction:This Quicknote is intended to serve as an elementary guide to the use of Macintosh computers in the ITS Student Computer Labs. It will acquaint you with such topics as: how to correctly login and logout of a computer, how to access server applications, how to save your work, and how to print using Self-Service Print Stations. Before You Begin:First you must turn on your monitor and machine. |

¨ To turn your monitor on, you need to press the power button located on the bottom portion of the dome. When the monitor is on, a light will appear in the bottom right-hander corner of the monitor.

The Dock is the new way of switching between applications in Mac OS X that shows what is running on the Mac and faster access. The Dock lies on the bottom of the screen.

To launch or switch to an application:
Simply click on an application’s icon in the Dock.
To Resize a Window:
Click on the box in the lower right-hand corner and drag.
To Close an Open Window
on the Desktop:
1. Go to File
2. Go to Close Window
-OR-
1. Click the box in the upper left-hand corner of the
window.
To Close an Open
Application:
1. Go to File
2. Then go to Close or Quit.
To access progdata, open the Progdata folder located on the Dock.
You have two options when saving your work. You can save your work on a zip disk or to your home directory. Follow the instructions below.
Insert a disk in the disk drive. You should then see a picture of a disk on the desktop.
To Format a zip disk:
1. Highlight disk on the
desktop with the mouse.
2. Go to Special, then Erase disk...
3. Choose Zip-100 in the name box.
4. Click Erase
Warning: All existing files on a disk will be erased if you reformat the disk.
To Save to a zip disk:
1. Within your program, go to
File, then Save
2. Click on Desktop
3. Highlight your disk and click Open.
**Note: You may need to scroll to find your disk if it doesn't automatically appear.
4. In the Save Current
Document as: box, enter the filename of your document.
5. Click Save.
To Access information on a zip disk:
1. Within your program, go to
File, then Open
2. Click on Desktop
3. Highlight your disk and click Open.
**Note: You may need to scroll to find your disk if it doesn't automatically appear.
4. Highlight the filename of your document and click Open.
Ejecting a disk:
Click on the disk and drag the disk to the trash.
2. Using Your Home Directory:
All students have been allocated 50MB of file space on the
Student server. The space is located in the Home Directory.
To Save to the home directory:
1. Within your program, go to File, and then Save.
2. In the Save Current Document as: box, enter the filename of your document.
3. Click on Home and click Save.
To Access the home directory:
1. Within your program, go to File, then Open
2. Click on Desktop
3. Highlight Home and click Open.
4. Highlight the filename of your document and click Open.
To Delete a File:
Click on the filename you wish to delete and drag it to the trash can.
If you delete files, they get dumped into the trash can on the desktop. When the trash can on the desktop appears to have trash in it or is full, you need to empty the trash.
To Empty the Trash:
1. Go to Special...then go to Empty Trash.
2. This will remove everything in the trash can.
**Note: Items on floppy disk will remain in the trash on the floppy disk until the trash is emptied.
The computer labs use a method of Self-Service Printing. When you print a file, it goes into a queue on the network. Then, when you are ready to pick up your printouts, you simply go to the printer workstation, select your job, and click Print.

At your computer 1. Within your program, go to File and click Print. At the Print Station Now you will be prompted to login. 2. In the Logon ID field, type your uniqname. 3. In the Password field, type your LAN password. 4. Then click the Log On button. |

You will see the name of your job under the title, Job Name. 1. Click on your print job once to highlight it. 2. Click the Print button to print the highlighted job or click the Delete button to delete it from the queue. **Note: Print jobs stay in the queue up to 4 hours. Internet: |

In order to access any websites outside U of M-Flint, you must be logged in to the server. If you are not logged in, you will be automatically prompted to login.
**Note: If you are idle for more than 5 minutes, this login screen may come up again.

If you get login screen. 1. Set the context to default. 2. In the username box, enter your Uniqname. 3. In the password box, enter your LAN password. 4. Double check to make sure the URL is entered correctly in the destination. 5. Finally, click the Login button. |

In order to shutdown the computer, you must first close all the programs that you have opened.
To Close a Program:
1. Go to File...
2. Go to Close or Quit.
**Note: You may want to check the Finder located in the upper right hand corner of the monitor. When you click on the Finder, it will give you a list of all the open programs.
