Accessing Printing Services over the Wireless Network

Quicknote # 16

Introduction:

This Quicknote is written as a tool to assist UM-Flint students, faculty, and staff to access the Pharos Uniprint printing system over the wireless network. 

 

**Please note:  these instructions are for Windows based machines and Mac OSX only.  At this time printing to network printers is not supported for other operating systems.

Make sure your computer or laptop’s wireless access card is properly configured. For further assistance on how to set up your computer to access the wireless network, please see one of the following Quicknotes:

Adding Printing Services to a Windows machine:

  1. Click on “Start”. 
  2. Click on “Printers and Faxes”. 

 

  1. Click on “Add a Printer”.  

 

  1. Click “Next” on the first Printer Wizard window that appears.
  2. Select “A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer” and click “Next”.

  1. Select “Connect to this printer” and enter \\uniprint.umflint.edu\main as shown in the picture, and press “Next”.

  1. If you are asked to login when connecting, enter your uniqname@umflint.edu and your LAN password.  Uncheck the “Remember my password” box.

  1. A warning may display.  Click “Yes”.
  2. Select “No” when it asks if you would like to use the printer as your default printer.
  3. Click “Finish”.

 

  1. Once you have successfully completed the above ten steps you will have a new printer listed when you click on the “Print” option in programs.  To print to a Uniprint station select \\uniprint.umflint.edu\main from the printer name drop-down in the print dialog and select “OK” (illustrated below). 

 

12.  Your document will be sent to the Pharos Uniprint system.  To complete the printing process please visit one of the Uniprint locations, log into the print station next to the printer, and release your print job.  (Please see the What is Uniprint? Adding Printing Services to a Mac OSX machine:

1.  Open the “Printer Setup Utility” by going to “Applications” and then “Utilities”. 

2.  Click “Add”. 

3.  Enter the information as shown in the image at the right.  Make sure that “Line Printer Daemon – LPD” is the chosen protocol.  The address should be “uniprint.umflint.edu”.  The queue should be “main”.  Make sure “Print Using” is set to be “Generic PostScript Printer” and then press “Add”

Where to retrieve your printed documents:

To retrieve your printed documents you will first need to log into a Uniprint print station (located next to the printer) at one of the locations listed below and release the print job. 

 

Uniprint printing stations and printers are available for general student access in the following areas:

·        206 Murchie Science Building

·        3174 William S. White Building

·        226 French Hall

·        Student Services Loft Area in the University Center (UCEN)

·        2nd floor of the Thompson Library
