Quicknote #22: Student Access to Progdata

Progdata is a directory on the Student Applications server where faculty members are assigned a subdirectory in which they can upload files for students to read, print, or download. Samples of files commonly placed in Progdata are: class syllabi, class assignments, and data files to be used by students in completing a class assignment.
Access From Any ITS Student Lab
If You are Using Windows XP/Vista
- Find your computer and turn it on.
- Log in using your uniqname and password. Refer to Quicknote #10 for instructions on how to use the Windows machine in the ITS computer labs.
- Double-click on the icon located on the desktop.

- Find your instructor's directory, and double-click on it.
- At this point, you may read, copy, or print as many files as you wish.
If You are Using Macintosh
- Go to the Apple menu and select Go.
- Now select Connect to Server.
- In the text box for address enter: smb://progdata.umflint.edu/progdata.
- Click on Connect.
- In the dialog box that appears enter FLINT-NT in the Workgroup/Domain text box.
- Enter your uniqname for username.
- Enter your LAN password for password.
- Click OK.
- At this point, you may read, copy, or print as many files as you wish.
**Note: You will need to be connected to the Internet and the VPN (What is a VPN?) to access Progdata from home. For information on how to connect to the VPN, please refer to Quicknote #80.
To Access Progdata From Home Using Your Web Browser
- Open your web browser. (i.e. Internet Explorer or Firefox)
- Type in the website address, \\deptdrive.umflint.edu\progdata.
**Note: If Progdata does not show up in folder view, go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab, and select Enable folder view for FTP sites. Click Apply and then OK. - To download a file from Progdata to your computer at home, first find the file in the specified directory on Progdata.
- Then, click on the file you want. This will open the File Download dialog box.
- Click Save. This will now open Save as dialog box.
- Choose a directory on your hard drive to save the file and click OK or Save.
- You can now open the file from the saved location, with the appropriate application.
