Quicknote #22: Student Access to Progdata

Introduction

Progdata is a directory on the Student Applications server where faculty members are assigned a subdirectory in which they can upload files for students to read, print, or download.  Samples of files commonly placed in Progdata are: class syllabi, class assignments, and data files to be used by students in completing a class assignment.


Access From Any ITS Student Lab

If You are Using Windows XP/Vista

  1. Find your computer and turn it on.
  2. Log in using your uniqname and password.  Refer to Quicknote #10 for instructions on how to use the Windows machine in the ITS computer labs.
  3. Double-click on  the icon located on the desktop.
  4. Find your instructor's directory, and double-click on it.
  5. At this point, you may read, copy, or print as many files as you wish.


If You are Using Macintosh

  1. Go to the Apple menu and select Go.
  2. Now select Connect to Server.
  3. In the text box for address enter: smb://progdata.umflint.edu/progdata.
  4. Click on Connect.
  5. In the dialog box that appears enter FLINT-NT in the Workgroup/Domain text box.
  6. Enter your uniqname for username.
  7. Enter your LAN password for password.
  8. Click OK.
  9. At this point, you may read, copy, or print as many files as you wish.


Access From Home

**Note: You will need to be connected to the Internet and the VPN (What is a VPN?) to access Progdata from home.  For information on how to connect to the VPN, please refer to Quicknote #80

To Access Progdata From Home Using Your Web Browser

  1. Open your web browser. (i.e. Internet Explorer or Firefox)
  2. Type in the website address, \\deptdrive.umflint.edu\progdata.
    **Note: If Progdata does not show up in folder view, go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab, and select Enable folder view for FTP sites. Click Apply and then OK.
  3. To download a file from Progdata to your computer at home, first find the file in the specified directory on Progdata.
  4. Then, click on the file you want. This will open the File Download dialog box.
  5. Click Save. This will now open Save as dialog box.
  6. Choose a directory on your hard drive to save the file and click OK or Save.
  7. You can now open the file from the saved location, with the appropriate application.
