Quicknote #23: Faculty & Staff Access to Progdata

Progdata is a directory on the Student Applications server where faculty members are assigned a subdirectory in which they place files for students to read, print, or copy onto their own disks. Examples of files commonly placed in Progdata are: class syllabi, class assignments, and data files to be used by students when completing class assignments.
Faculty requiring a Progdata directory should apply at the ITS office in 207 MSB or fill out this online Access Request Form.
Access From Any Faculty/Staff Office:
If You Are Using Windows XP:
- Turn the computer on.
- Log in using your uniqname and password.
- Open "My Computer".
- Double-click on "Pcpub on 'Deptdrive' (L:)".
- Double-click on "win95".
- Double-click on "Server Applications".
- Right-click on "Progdata" and hold your mouse over "Send to...". From the menu that appears left-click on "Desktop (create shortcut)".
- Go to your desktop, double-click on the shortcut.
- In the Explorer window that opens, find your directory and double-click it.
- At this point, you will be able to create subdirectories, and add, modify, or delete files as you wish -- limited only by the allotted directory size.
**Note: If you are going to be working with the files in your directory, it is suggested that you copy the file to your local hard drive before editing it. When you are done working with the file, copy it back to your Progdata directory.
If You Are Using Macintosh
- Go to the Apple menu and select Chooser.
- Click on the AppleShare icon once, and then click once on UMICH-FLINT-ITS-LABS.
- Find UMF-SAPP and double-click on it.
- If prompted, select Apple Standard VAMS as your logon method and click OK.
- Enter your uniqname and password. Then click OK..
- Click OK when it asks you to select UMF-SAPP as the item you want to use.
- Close the Chooser box.
- Double-click on the UMF-SAPP.SYS icon on your desktop.
- Double-click on the Progdata folder.
- Find your directory, and double-click on it.
- At this point, you will be able to create subdirectories, and add, modify, or delete files as you wish--limited only by the allotted directory size.
**Note: If you are going to be working with the files in your directory, it is suggested that you copy the file to your local hard drive before editing it. When you are done working with the file, copy it back to your Progdata directory.
You will need to be connected to the internet and the VPN to access Progdata from home. For information on how to connect to the VPN please refer to Quicknote #80. Once faculty and staff are connected to the VPN they can access Progdata by following these steps:
- Right-click on My Computer and select Map Network Drive.
- Select an unused drive letter in the drive box. In the folder box enter \\deptdrive.umflint.edu\Progdata and uncheck the box Reconnect at startup.
- Select Finish and Progdata will now be available inside of My Computer.
**Remember to disconnect the VPN when you are finished.
