How to Use the EZProxy

Introduction:

This Quicknote is written as a tool to assist University of Michigan-Flint users to access library databases and Electronic Reserves from off campus.

This Quicknote assumes that you have a connection to the Internet, know which browser and version you are using, and know what your uniqname and LAN password is. To find out which browser and version you are using, open the browser, go to the help menu and choose About Internet Explorer or About Mozilla.

To Connect Using:

To accept cookies in Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Click on tools in the toolbar
  3. Click on Internet Options
  4. Click on Privacy Settings tab.
  5. Lower the setting one level (e.g. "medium high" to "medium")

To treat EZProxy as a trusted site in Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Click on tools in the toolbar
  3. Click on Internet Options
  4. Click on Security
  5. Click on Trusted sites
  6. Click on "Sites"
  7. Uncheck the box "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone"
  8. Add http://libproxy.umflint.edu to the list

To accept cookies in Mozilla Firefox

  1. Open Mozilla Firefox
  2. Click on tools in the toolbar
  3. Click on Options
  4. Click on Privacy on the left hand side.
  5. Click on Cookies
  6. Check “Allow sites to set cookies”

To treat EZProxy as a trusted site in Mozilla Firefox

  1. Open Mozilla Firefox
  2. Click on tools in the toolbar
  3. Click on Options
  4. Click on Privacy on the left hand side
  5. Click on Cookies
  6. Click on Exceptions
  7. In the Address bar, type in http://libproxy.umflint.edu
  8. Click on Allow and click OK.
   

To Access the Databases:

Once you have configured the settings for your browser and version. Return to the list of databases on the Thompson Library website at (http://lib.umflint.edu) or the Electronic Reserves login page at  http://libproxy.umflint.edu:2048/login

  1. Enter your uniqname and LAN password at the authentication screen.
  2. Click the login button to continue.
  3. The selected database should appear.
