**Please note that even though Banner will be available via the internet, due to FERPA, remote access from off campus will not be allowed!

Before You Begin:

You must have a Web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla, installed on your computer to complete this Quicknote.  For more information on how to install a Web browser, please contact the ITS HelpDesk.  Please see the Additional Resources at the end of this Quicknote.

Accessing INB for the First Time:

The first time you access INB, you will be prompted to install Oracle JInitiator, an Internet plug-in required to run INB. It will be necessary to have this plug-in installed on any computer that is used to access Banner. Macintosh users should not need to install the plug-in, but will receive a message asking whether “…you want to grant access to Java”, and should click ‘Always Grant’ for this message.

INB Setup (Windows Users Only)

**Note: Window 2000/XP users must be the computer administrator in order to install this software.

1.      Go to L:\Secure Software\Banner 7 and double-click the Banner7Final.exe file to install j-initiator and install the new security certificate.

2.      Just follow the on-screen prompts to install this software (click Begin).

3.      At the end of the installation you must restart your computer.

**Note: Banner 7 has a new URL. Go to http://www.umflint.edu/banner to access Banner 7.

Logging in to Banner:

Two web browser windows are required to run INB. When accessing INB, an ‘Oracle Forms Server – Web’ window will appear first and begin loading the plug-in necessary to run Banner. When that is finished, a second window, titled ‘UM-Flint Internet Native Banner’, will open and run the actual Banner forms. **Note:  Both windows must remain open while Banner is in use – if the user closes either window, the Banner session will be closed.

1. Open your web browser (e.g., Internet Explorer or Mozilla).

2. Go to http://www.umflint.edu/banner.

3. Type your uniqname in the Username: field of the logon window, then press <Tab>.

4.  Type your password in the Password: field, then press <Tab>.

5. Type prod in the Database: field as the database you wish to use.

6. Press <Enter> or click Connect

Exiting INB:

1.      Click the Exit icon in the horizontal toolbar and click ‘Yes’ to the pop up box.

2.      This will close your Banner session, but the INB window will remain open.

®       If you are finished using Banner, close the INB window.

®       If you would like to log back in to Banner, click the Refresh button to re-open a Banner session.

Miscellaneous Tips:

®       The navigation frame on the left when you’re in a form no longer appears.  Navigation options now appear in the Options menu.

®       When a user clicks on a link from email or another browser, it can reuse the Banner “parent” window, thus immediately ending the Banner “child” session without warning. There is a setting in Internet Explorer that can prevent the “parent” window from being reused. Go to Tools, Internet Options, click on the Advanced tab – then uncheck “Reuse windows for launching shortcuts”.

®       If you have Windows XP and the form backgrounds are grey rather than white, then you can change your display settings to make the forms white by right-clicking your desktop, select properties, click on the Appearance tab, under Windows and buttons select Windows XP style.
