Quicknote #44: Using Fetch FTP for Macintosh

Introduction:

This Quicknote is written as a tool to assist University of Michigan-Flint users with the installation, setup, and use of Fetch FTP for use with Macintosh computers.  It also outlines how to access Progdata, your Personal directory, and your Departmental directory from home.

This Quicknote assumes you have an internet connection at home.  You must be connected to the University network via VPN to access Progdata, your Personal directory, and your department directory from home.  For more information on the VPN please refer to Quicknote #80

For instructions on how to connect your Macintosh to the UM system, refer to Quicknote #40 for using Remote Access or PPP method.

Before You Begin

All users will need to connect to the UMF network via a VPN connection prior to attempting to access Progdata, departmental drives, or their personal drives using this Quicknote.  Please refer to Quicknote #80 for more details on how to connect to the VPN.  While you are connected to the VPN you will be unable to surf the internet: you will only be able to make use of university resources such as Progdata, personal/departmental drives, and remote desktop access to your office computer (this last resource is for faculty/staff only, please see Quicknote #64).

To Obtain the Fetch Software: 

Download Fetch from the Internet:

  1. Open your web browser and enter the following address.  ftp://progdata.umflint.edu/ITS/MAC/FETCH
  2. Click on fetch.bin.  The file will be downloaded then decoded.
  3. You should be prompted to open Fetch.bin.
  4. Choose to open with Stuffit Expander
  5. If you do not have stuffit expander save to disk
  6. If you do not have the option to open with stuffit Expander Proceed to Installing Stuffit Expander.
  7. If you have Stuffit Expander installed Proceed to Installing Fetch

Installing Stuffit Expander:

  1. Open your web browser and enter the following address.  ftp://progdata.umflint.edu/ITS/MAC/stuffit
  2. Click on stuffit.dmg.  Save the file to your desktop
  3. Double Click on Stuffit.dmg.  Double click the Stuffit Installer
  4. Follow on Screen directions clicking Next until installer finishes.
  5. Proceed to Installing Fetch

Installing Fetch:

  1. Double-click the fetch.bin
  2. Stuffit Expander will unpack the folder contents.
  3. A folder named “Fetch 4.0.1.1 Folder” will appear on the desktop.
  4. This folder can be moved to the applications directory.
  5. Fetch is now installed.

 

Accessing Progdata, Your Personal & Departmental Directories:

**Please note: You must be connected to the VPN before you attempt to FTP into any network resource.  Please refer to Quicknote #80 for more details on how to connect to the VPN. 

Accessing Progdata

  1. Click on the  icon
  2. A New Connection dialog box will appear.  
  3. When all of the information is entered (as shown below) click OK.

username: uniquename@umflint.edu.
Password: LAN Password.

Enter the above information as shown in the image below:

Accessing Your Personal Directory (H: Drive)

  1. Open Fetch application
  2. Cancel out of new connection.
  3. From the drop-down menu, click on shortcuts.
  4. Click on new shortcut
  5. Enter all of the information below as shown in the image (see below).
  6. A list of files and folders in your personal directory should appear.  Proceed to Transferring Files.

Kind: Folder
Hostname: homedrive.umflint.edu
username:
uniquename@umflint.edu.
Connect Using: FTP
Password: LAN Password.

Accessing Your Departmental Directory (I: Drive)

  1. Follow steps 1 through 4 above for Accessing Your Personal Directory.
  2. Your department name should now appear in the list of folders.  Double-click on your department name.
  3. A list of files and folders in your departmental directory should appear.  Proceed to Transferring Files.

Connect Using: FTP
Password: LAN Password.
 



Transferring Files:

Downloading Files

  1. Highlight the file you wish to download by clicking on it.
  2. Click the Get... button.
  3. Choose a location to save the file and click the Save button.
  4. The file will now be downloaded onto your computer.

Uploading Files

  1. Click the Put File... button.
  2. Choose the file you wish to upload.
  3. Click the Open button.
  4. If desired, enter a different name to save the file on the remote server. Click OK to upload the file to the remote system.
