Quicknote #80: How to Setup a VPN from Home

Introduction:

This Quicknote is written as a tool to assist the user in setting up a Virtual Private Network from home. Users will then be able to access University resources from home as if they were on campus. 

Before You Begin:

These instructions apply to people using Windows 2000/XP or Mac OS X. Please note : The VPN is not supported on Win 98/ME. Users will need to have some special software installed before they are able to make a VPN connection to the University. Users will need to have a fully updated virus scanner, a fully updated OS, and a software firewall. Directions on how to obtain these things are located below.  

1.     Installing a Virus Scanner:

Virus scanning software must be installed before you proceed with the rest of the quicknote. Please see Quicknote #26 - Using Antivirus Software for complete instructions to downloading and installing virus scanning software located http://www.umflint.edu/its/helpdesk/quicknotes/QN26.htm  

** Virus Scanning software must be installed before a VPN connection can be established with the University of Michigan – Flint **

2.     Windows XP and Macintosh OSX Updates

No matter what operating system you use be sure to have the most recent security patches and updates installed.

To run Windows XP Update 

For more information about Windows Update, please our What is Windows Update ? flyers.

  1. Click “Start.”
  2. Click “All Programs.”
  3. At the top of the menu click on “Windows Update.”
  4. When the web interface loads click on "Scan for Updates".
    **Note – If this is the 1st time you are running Windows Update, Microsoft will ask to install their scanning software. Click Yes each time the dialog window is presented to install the software. **
  5. Make sure all critical updates are selected and select any of the recommended updates and select the “Update Now” button.
  6. Let the updates download and install. When finished you will be prompted to reboot your computer. After this is completed your computer is up to date.

To Update Macintosh OSX 

  1. Click the “Apple Menu” and select “System Preferences.”
  2. Click on the “Software Update” icon.
  3. Click on the “Update Software” tab at the top of the window, and then click the “Check Now” button at the bottom.
  4. Check all the boxes for updates, and select the “Install” button.
  5. Let the Macintosh download and install all the necessary updates. You will be prompted to restart the computer. After this is completed you are finished with the update.

3.     Firewall For the VPN:

If you are using Windows XP, you can install Service Pack2 and then enable the firewall for the VPN connection

To enable the Windows firewall, use the following steps (reference the image below the steps to confirm your settings):

  1. Download and install Service Pack 2 from Microsoft.
  2. The firewall is enabled by default so you should have to do nothing else.
  3. To verify that the Firewall is enabled, click on Start.
  4. Click on Control Panel.
  5. Click on Windows Firewall.
  6. In the Windows firewall dialog box make sure that the firewall is set to ON (the icon with the green shield).
  7. Press OK. 

A firewall is required to be active on the computer before you can connect to the UM-Flint VPN. 

If Service Pack 2 for Windows XP is not present, or you are running Windows 2000 please install Zone Alarm as your primary firewall.

To obtain a firewall please visit www.download.com and download Zone Alarm by searching for “Zone Alarm” in the search field on the site.  The fourth search result should be: “ZoneAlarm 6.1.737” this is the file you want to download.  For instructions and support on installing and using Zone Alarm please consult the Zone Alarm website at www.zonelabs.com.

Security Settings for Zone Alarm

  1. On the left click on the “Firewall” tab.
  2. Make sure the “Internet Zone” is set to “High.”
  3. Click on the “Zones” tab at the top.
  4. At the bottom of the window click the “ADD>>” button and select “IP Range.”
  5. In the “Zone” field make sure Trusted is selected
  6. In the first “IP Address” field type 141.216.0.0
  7. In the second “IP Address” field type 141.216.255.255
  8. In the “Description” type UMFlint VPN

** Note – If you are running a hardware firewall at home, for example you have a home network running behind a switch, router, or hub, please open port 1723 TCP,UDP on the firewall to allow for a VPN connection to be established.

Setting up the VPN with the Installation File (Faculty/Staff only, students must follow the manual installation):

    1. You can obtain the VPN Installation Software while on-campus.  Go to L:\Secure Software\VPN\ and copy all the files to a thumb/flash drive or a floppy disk.
      2. Insert the VPN installation disk into your 3.5” Floppy (A:\) Drive or connect your flash/thumb drive to the computer you wish to install the VPN on.
    2. Double-click on My Computer.
    3. Double-click on 3.5” Floppy (A:\) or navigate to your flash/thumb drive, as appropriate.
    4. Double click on the VPN icon
    5. Click Yes when the following box appears.  
    6. When the box below appears select either All users or My use only depending on your preference.
      • If All users is selected then every account on the computer will have the VPN installed on it. 
      • If My use only is selected then only your account on the computer will have the VPN installed on it. 
    7. Check the box "Add a shortcut on the desktop" to place a shortcut to the VPN connection placed on the users desktop.
    8. Verify that the VPN connection is firewalled by following the next few steps.  Double-click the UMFLINT VPN connect from your desktop.
    9. Click the Properties button.
       
    10. Click on the ADVANCED tab.
    11. Click the SETTINGS button.
    12. In the Windows firewall dialog box make sure that the firewall is set to ON (the icon with the green shield).
    13. Press OK until you are back at your UM-Flint VPN connection.
       

Setting up the VPN Manually:

Windows XP

  1. Click on the Start Button, and select the Control Panel.
  2. Inside the Control Panel select Network Connections.
  3. On the left under the Other Places heading select My Network Places.
  4. Under the “Network Tasks” heading select “Create a new connection.” The new connection wizard will now start in order to create the connection to the VPN.
  5. Select Connect to the network at my workplace and click Next .
  6. Select Virtual Private Network connection and click Next .
  7. Under “Company Name” enter in Umflint and click Next .
  8. Under “Host name or IP address” enter remote.umflint.edu and click Next.
  9. By default My use only is selected. Meaning you will only see the connection when you are logged in. If you want everybody to see the connection, select Anyone’s Use .
  10. In the final box you will be asked if you would like to place a link to the connection on your desktop. If you would like to put a Check in the box indicating so and press Finish , otherwise leave the checkbox blank and select Finish .

You are now finished setting up your Virtual Private Network.

Mac OS X

Please proceed to the "Connecting to the VPN" section.  There are no setup steps for Mac OS X.

Connecting to the VPN

Using Window XP 

  1. Either inside of Network Connections or on your Desktop , double-click your VPN connection icon. 
  2. Click on the Properties button at the bottom of the window.
  3. Click on the Options tab. Check the box “Include Windows logon domain” and click OK .
  4. The box shown below will appear to connect to the VPN.
    In the User name : field, enter your Uniqname .
    In the Password field, enter your LAN Password .
    **Note: This is your E-mail Password .
    In the Domain : field type Flint-NT
  5. Press Connect and you will be connected to your Virtual Private Network.

Note that the VPN connection icon on the desktop will appear “Lit up” and a message will appear that you are connected in the lower right hand corner. Also inside your Control Panel, under Network Connections your VPN Icon should look like this when connected.  

What you can do now that you are connected? 

When you connect to the UM-Flint VPN your computer can utilize the campus network. When connected you can setup your Outlook Account at home using Microsoft Outlook (Solves the High Speed Internet Problem). You can Map Network drives and take advantage of Microsoft Windows Messenger for communication with people on campus.

** Remember to Disconnect the VPN when finished with it. **

Using Mac OSX: 

  1. Double-click on the Macintosh HD
  2. Double-click on Applications
  3. Double-click on Internet Connect
  4. Click on File and select New VPN Connection Window
  5. In the Server address box, type: remote.umflint.edu. (see below)
  6. In the User name box, type: Your Uniqname
  7. In the Password box, type: Your LAN Password. 
  8. Click the Connect button. You have now established a connection to the UMFlint VPN.

What you can do now that you are connected? 

When you connect to the UM-Flint VPN your computer can utilize the campus network.   1. Double-click the same VPN icon used to connect.
  2. Click on the Disconnect button.

*** Note – Please Remember to DISCONNECT the VPN when you are done using it. *** 

Mapping Network Resources:

Windows 98/ME/XP 

Students connecting to your home H: drive 

  1. Right-Click on My Computer and select Map Network Drive .
  2. Select an unused drive letter in the drive: box. In the folder: box enters in \\homedrive.umflint.edu\home and uncheck the box Reconnect at startup if you do not wish to have your home drive mapped when you start your computer.
  3. Select Finish and your Home drive will now be available inside of My Computer .

** Remember to Disconnect the VPN when finished with it. **

Faculty/Staff connecting to your home H: drive 

  1. Right-Click on My Computer and select Map Network Drive .
  2. Select an unused drive letter in the drive: box. In the folder: box enter in \\homedrive.umflint.edu\home\uniqname and uncheck the box Reconnect at startup if you do not wish to have your home drive mapped when you start your computer.
  3. Select Finish and your Home drive will now be available inside of My Computer .

** Remember to Disconnect the VPN when finished with it. **

Faculty/Staff connecting to your departmental I: drive 

  1. Right-Click on My Computer and select Map Network Drive .
  2. Select an unused drive letter in the drive: box. In the folder: box enter in \\deptdrive.umflint.edu\dept\folder and uncheck the box Reconnect at startup if you do not wish to have your home drive mapped when you start your computer.
  3. Select Finish and your Home drive will now be available inside of My Computer .

** Remember to Disconnect the VPN when finished with it. **

Mac OSX: 

Students Connecting to their H:\ Home Drives 

  1. Select Go .
  2. Select Connect to Server .
  3. In the address box type: smb://homedrive.umflint.edu/home .
  4. When prompted to login enter in your Uniqname as the Username and your LAN Password as the password .

You will now see a homedrive.umflint.edu icon on your desktop. To get to your H:\ drive open the folder named homedrive.umflint.edu and find your uniqname. 

** Remember to Disconnect the VPN when finished with it. **

Students Connecting to Progdata 

  1. Select Go
  2. Select Connect to Server
  3. In the Address box type: smb://progdata.umflint.edu/progdata

There will be an Umf-Sapp folder on your Desktop, open it and look for the progdata folder inside of it. Click the progdata folder and you will see all the folders contained in progdata. 

** Remember to Disconnect the VPN when finished with it. **

Faculty/Staff Connecting to their H:\ Home Drive 

  1. Select Go
  2. Select Connect to Server
  3. In the address box type: smb://homedrive.umflint.edu/home/uniqname
  4. When the next window opens up select Umf-ddapp2.dept and select OK
  5. When prompted to login enter in your Uniqname as the Username and your LAN Password as the password .
  6. You will now see a Umf-ddapp2.dept on your desktop. To get to your H:\ drive open the folder named Umf-ddapp2.data and follow the path office/home/uniqname .

** Remember to Disconnect the VPN when finished with it. **

Faculty/Staff Connecting to their I:\ Department Drive 

  1. Select Go .
  2. Go to Connect to Server .
  3. In the address box type: smb://deptdrive.umflint.edu/dept/folder.
  4. When the next window opens up select Homedrive.data and select OK .
  5. When prompted to login enter in your Uniqname as the Username and your LAN Password as the password .
  6. You will now see an Homedrive.data folder on your desktop. To get to your I:\ drive open the folder named Homedrive.data and follow the path dept/“department name.”

** Remember to Disconnect the VPN when finished with it. **
