Installing MS Outlook 2000 for Windows

Quicknote #82

Introduction:

This Quicknote is written as a tool to assist UM-Flint faculty, staff, and students with the installation and set-up of Microsoft Outlook 2000.  On-Campus users, if you have a Windows NT, 2000, or XP on campus, please call the HelpDesk to place a work ticket.

**Note: Some Internet Service Providers (ISP), including Comcast and Charter, have blocked port 135 until further notice.  It is.required for Outlook (full version) services.  If your ISP has blocked port 135, please use Outlook Web at http://mail.umflint.edu

Before You Begin:

Check System Requirements for Outlook 2000

Here are the requirements your computer needs to meet to run Microsoft Outlook 2000:

¨       PC with a Pentium 75 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor

¨       Microsoft Windows 95 or later operating system.

¨       32 megabytes (MB) of RAM 

¨       200 MB of available hard-disk space 

To determine the amount of RAM on your computer

1.      Click on the Start button, go to Run 

2.      Type Command in the box and click Ok.

3.      Type mem and hit Enter.

4.      Look at the "total memory".  For example 65,536 k = 64 MB.

5.      Type exit and hit Enter.

You should have 32 MB or more to run Outlook successfully.

To determine the amount of free space on your computer

1.      Click on the Start button, go to Run

2.      Type Command in the box and click Ok.

3.      Type Dir and hit Enter.

4.      Look at the free space.  For example 256.58 MB free.

5.      Type exit and hit Enter.

You should have 200 MB or more free to run Outlook successfully.

¨      You must have Internet Explorer version 4.0 or higher installed on your machine. 

To determine which version you have installed

1.      Open Internet Explorer.

2.      Click the Help menu near the top of your screen.

3.      Go to About Internet Explorer  

The window should display the version number.  If it is lower than 4.0, please contact the ITS HelpDesk.

¨      Close all applications before you begin installation!

Outlook Installation:

From Home

You will need a copy of Outlook installed on your computer.  When you install Microsoft Office 2000 Premium Edition, which can be purchased from ITS (for details click here), Outlook is included.  You should see an MS Outlook Icon on your desktop.

From Campus

Microsoft Outlook XP is used on-campus.  Please see Quicknote #83 – Installing MS Outlook XP for Windows.

Outlook Initial Setup:

1.      To access Outlook Mail, double-click the MS Outlook icon on your desktop.

**Note:  If this is the first time you have accessed Outlook, it will open an Outlook 2000 Startup window, just click Next.  If this is not the first time you have run Outlook then skip to the "Setting up my new account in Outlook" section of this Quicknote.

2.      Under the E-mail Service Option, select Corporate or Workgroup and click Next.

3.      Enter your name and initials in the boxes provided.

**Note: If the Setup Wizard does not appear, please Exit the program and skip to the Experiencing Problems with your Mailbox? section of this Quicknote.

4.      Next, the Setup Wizard will begin.

Check Microsoft Exchange Server and then click Next.

5.      Enter Microsoft Exchange Server information.

For the Exchange Server name, enter

exchange-1.umflint.edu
For the mailbox, enter your uniqname and click Next. SHAPE  \* MERGEFORMAT

  

6.      When asked if you travel with this computer, say No and click Next.

   

7.      Click Finish to close the Setup Wizard.

**Note Users from Home:  You must be dialed up and connected to an Internet Service Provider in order to check your mail. For instructions on how to connect using the UM-Flint dialup, please review Quicknote #51 for more information.  As long as you have an Internet connection, you can retrieve your e-mail without connecting to the UM system.

8.      It will prompt you to log in.

For User Name, enter your uniqname

For Domain Name, enter flint-nt

For Password, enter your Outlook password and click Ok.

Setting up My New Account in Outlook 

This section is for people who have already been using Outlook to check other mail and now wish to set Outlook up to check their new umflint.edu account or believe Outlook was configured incorrectly.. 

1.      Open Outlook, from the Tools menu, select Options

2.      Under Mail Service tab, click the Reconfigure Mail Support button.

3.      Select Corporate or Workgroup and click Next.  Then click OK.

4.      Now exit Outlook. Continue to Step 1 of Experiencing Problems with your Mailbox.


 

Experiencing Problems with your Mailbox?

1.      Right-click on the Outlook icon and go to Properties.

2.      Highlight the Microsoft Exchange Server and click the Properties button.

**Note: If Exchange Server does not appear in the box, then click Add, then select it from the list and click Ok.

3.      Under the General tab, 

For Microsoft Exchange server: enter exchange-1.umflint.edu 

For the Mailbox: enter your uniqname and click Check Name.  

Make sure you have Automatically Detect connection state selected.

4.      It will prompt you to log in.

For User Name, enter your uniqname

For Domain Name, enter flint-nt

For Password, enter your Outlook password and click Ok.

     

 

 

**Note:  If it found your information from the server, your entries will appear underlined. Click Apply to save the information and click Ok to exit that window.

5.      Click on the Delivery tab.
You will be prompted to log in again.
Make sure that "Deliver new mail to the following location" is set to your mailbox.

6.      Click Ok.
