Installing MS Outlook XP/2003
for Windows

Quicknote #83

Introduction:

This Quicknote is written as a tool to assist UM-Flint Faculty, Staff, and Students with the installation and set-up of Microsoft Outlook with Windows 98/2000/XP operating system. If you have Windows NT on campus, please call the HelpDesk to place a work ticket.

**Note: Some Internet Service Providers (ISP), including Comcast and Charter, have blocked port 135 until further notice. It is required for Outlook (full version) services. If your ISP has blocked port 135, please use Outlook Web at http://mail.umflint.edu.

Before You Begin:

¨      Check System Requirements for Outlook XP

Here are the requirements your computer needs to meet to run

For Microsoft Outlook XP:

¨       PC with a Pentium 133 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor

¨       Microsoft Windows 98 or later operating system.

¨       128 megabytes (MB) of RAM 

¨       250 MB of available hard-disk space 

For Microsoft Outlook 2003:

¨       PC with a Pentium 233 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor

¨       Microsoft Windows 2000 (SP3), Windows XP, or later operating system.

¨       128 megabytes (MB) of RAM 

¨       400 MB of available hard-disk space 

To determine the amount of RAM on your computer

1.      Click on the Start button, go to Run 

2.      Type Command in the box and click Ok.

3.      Type mem and hit Enter.

4.      Look at the "total memory".  For example 65,536 k = 64 MB.

5.      Type exit and hit Enter.

You should have 128 MB or more to run Outlook successfully.

To determine the amount of free space on your computer

1.      Open My Computer.

2.      Right-Click the local disk C:\ and go to properties.

3.      Click on the General Tab and look at the free space. For example 256.58 MB free.

4.      Click the red X in the corner to close the windows.

You should have 250 MB or more free to run Outlook successfully.

¨      You must have Internet Explorer version 5.0 or higher installed on your machine. 

To determine which version you have installed

1.      Open Internet Explorer.

2.      Click the Help menu near the top of your screen.

3.      Go to About Internet Explorer  

The window should display the version number.  If it is lower than 5.0, please contact the ITS HelpDesk.

¨      Close all applications before you begin installation!

Outlook Installation:

From Home

You will need a copy of Outlook installed on your computer.  When you install Microsoft Office XP Premium Edition, which can be purchased from ITS (for details click here), Outlook is included.  You should see an MS Outlook Icon on your desktop.

From Campus

1.      Double-click My Computer then double-click L:\

2.      Scroll down to the Win95 folder and double-click to open it.

3.      Find the Server Applications folder and double-click to open it.

4.      Double-click the Office XP Setup file to start the installation.

  1. On the Welcome screen select the first choice to Install Office XP.
  2. Next select the type of installation you would like based on the space available on your hard drive.
  3. Let the setup run on the computer, and this will complete the installation.

After the last reboot and log in you should see an MS Outlook Icon  on your desktop.

Outlook Initial Setup:

The first time you access Outlook it will request some information from you for the initial setup.  

To access Outlook Mail, double-click the Outlook icon on your desktop.

 

 

When you start outlook you will be prompted with this window.

For Username enter in your Uniqname.

For Password enter in your Outlook password.

For Domain Name enter in Flint-NT.

Outlook will now setup your profile automatically based on your information at the login of the computer.

If you experience problems with the initial setup, proceed to the next portion of the Quicknote.

Experiencing Problems with your Mailbox?

1.      Right-click on the Outlook icon and go to Properties.

 

 

 

 

 

 

2.      In Mail Setup window, select the Email Accounts button.


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

3.      In the Email Accounts window under the   E-Mail group, select Add a new e-mail account and select Next.

 

 

 

 

 

4.      In the next window under Server Type, select Microsoft Exchange Server and select Next.

 

 

 

 

 

5.      In the next window in the Microsoft Exchange Server box, type its-emb1.umflint.edu
In the User Name box, type your Uniqname and click the Check Name button.

6.      Click Next.  

7.      In the final window select Finish.

Outlook Installation At Home:

Microsoft Outlook is included in the Microsoft Office Package, which can be purchased through from ITS.    On your desktop you should see an Outlook icon such as this.  

Outlook Initial Setup:

When you run Outlook for the first time an Inbox setup wizard will start. Click next until you see the screen below.

 

 

 

1.      In the next window under Server Type, select IMAP and click Next.

 

 

 

 

2.      In the next window, FOR STUDENTS, in the User Information box, type your uniquename under Your Name: and your email address in the E-mail Address box. Under Server Information in the (IMAP) box: type mail.umflint.edu In the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) box: type your smb1.umflint.edu Under the Logon Information: insert your user name and password where indicated.

3.      Click Next.

Outlook is now setup on your computer and ready to use.
