Technology Orientation for Incoming Students

Welcome!

Congratulations on your acceptance to the University of Michigan-Flint!

This webpage will provide you with a quick introduction to the many computing services available to UMF students.  Please take a moment to review the student checklist, and check out the associated links for more information on services that may interest you.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact ITS at (810) 762-3123.

Many common questions about University technology resources can be answered by the ITS QuickNotes or What is...? Flyers

Student Information Services (SIS)

SIS provides students secure Internet access to personal and public information in the Banner system.  Student services available in SIS include registration, access to your schedule, transcript, grades, holds, tuition assessment, financial aid, and the campus computing menu.  All students must register for courses online via SIS.  The SIS Web site is http://www.umflint.edu/sis/

View Your Student Computer Account

Once admitted, students can view their computer account online using the Student Information Services (SIS).  To login to SIS, go to http://www.umflint.edu/sis/ ; click on the Student Services & Financial Aid menu, and then click on My Student Computer Account.  The first time you view  your student account, you will be asked to set your initial LAN password (check out the "What are all these Passwords for?" flyer for more information on your LAN password).

Your student computer account will give you access to many services available on campus, such as: your student email, computers on campus, printing in labs on campus, and the ability to connect to the campus wireless network when you are on campus.

Check your Student Email

As soon as you are admitted to UM-Flint, you are given a student email account so that the University can communicate with you.  To use this account, you may use Outlook web-based email, located at http://mail.umflint.eduQuickNotes are available to guide you in using Microsoft Outlook email.

Change Your Passwords

You may change passwords for most UM-Flint computing systems through SIS.  Login to SIS at http://www.umflint.edu/sis/ and select My Student Computer Account from the Student And Financial Aid menu.  Listed below are the most commonly used passwords on campus.  For complete details on how to change these passwords and more, please refer to the "What are all these passwords for?" flyer.

Your LAN password must be at least 8 characters long and contain a mix of numbers and letters.  A more detailed list of password requirements can be found at: http://www.umflint.edu/its/units/initiatives/publicity/passwords/dictionary_list.htm .  The LAN Password is used in conjunction with your uniqname to access several services including: student email, computers on campus, and printing in the labs.

This password is set at the same time as your LAN password when you reset your password in SIS.  It is used to access some library services and student employees can use it to access their paycheck information.  To set this password separately from your LAN password, please visit http://weblogin.umich.edu and login.  If you do not know your Ann Arbor password it can be reset by visiting the ITS HelpDesk and displaying a picture ID.

Get Your MCard

A MCard is required for many campus services.  At the beginning of each semester MCards and parking passes will be distributed in the University Pavilion next to Subway for approximately one week.  Check the ITS News Blog for posted times.  After the posted times have passed you may obtain your MCard from the 206 MSB computer lab or the 3174 WSW computer lab during normal lab hours.

Open Computing Lab located at 207 MSB

Locate the Computing Facilities on Campus

ITS provides several open computer labs and other computing facilities that can be utilized by students on campus.  Some of these facilities are listed below with brief details.  Please refer to http://www.umflint.edu/its/services/labs.htm for a complete list of ITS supported labs.  Pictures of the individual labs are also available at this link.

206 Murchie Science Building
This lab is the largest open computer lab on the UM-Flint campus with 85 machines available.  Of these machines there are 77 Windows XP stations, 4 Windows Vista stations, and 4 Macintosh stations.  Both black & white and color printers are available in this lab.  A redesign of the lab was done in Fall 2007 to encourage group work.

205 French Hall
This lab contains 37 Windows XP stations.  Only one black & white printer is available in this lab.  This lab was moved from 223 FH due to the renovation of the entire 2nd floor of French Hall and reopened in Winter 2008.

3174 William S. White Building
This lab contains 23 Windows XP stations and 4 Mac OS X stations.  When the lab is full. an additional lab is available next door to increase the total available work stations to 47 Windows XP stations and 4 Mac OS X stations.  Both black & white and color printers are available in this lab.  The pod design of this lab encourages group work.

Frances Willson Thompson Library
For students looking for complete silence while they work, there is an open lab available in the Library.  Seventy-five (75) Windows XP machines are available, spread out over the three floors of the Library.  Unlike the other three open computer labs, this computer lab is not monitored by Computer Lab Consultants.  If you require assistance with printing or software applications while you work, ITS recommends using one of the other three computer labs.  Library staff will not be able to assist you with the computers.

ITS Technology Center
Located in the main ITS office at 207 MSB, the ITS Technology Center offers tools for use on campus-related video and other multimedia projects.  Students may utilize the center for class projects requiring extensive multimedia capabilities.  Please contact ITS at 810-762-3123 if you need to reserve the room.
