A growing number of college students are downloading illegal software, music, and movies. Don't become involved in this illegal trend. Downloading copyrighted items without permission or using pirated software puts you at risk to have your computer infected with viruses, be expelled from school, and/or maybe even serve jail time. These are just a few ways that piracy can ruin your life. To read more reasons about why you don't want to become a pirate take a look at Define the Line's top 10 reasons to avoid technological crimes. In addition to the immediate personal risks, downloading illegal items also has a negative effect on the economy and job market.

Like any college student you probably want to get a job when you graduate, right? Being involved in the illegal downloading of music, movies and software may prevent you from this goal. Check out the May 9,2006 press release from Define the Line to learn how piracy now could prevent you from getting a job after graduation.
Are you aware of the consequences for violating the University of Michigan's Proper Use Policy? Check this out:
"In accordance with established University practices, policies, and procedures, confirmation of inappropriate use of University of Michigan technology resources may result in termination of access, disciplinary review, expulsion, termination of employment, legal action, or other disciplinary action. Service providers will, when necessary, work with other University offices such as the Judicial Advisor, the Department of Public Safety and Security, schools and colleges disciplinary councils, the Office of the General Counsel, and others in the resolution of problems."

When it comes to pirating software, it just doesn't make sense. As a student at the University of Michigan-Flint you receive incredible discounts on genuine copies of Microsoft software and several other applications. Using illegal copies of software can cause system crashes, which may cause you to lose valuable information. Make sure your software is genuine by visiting Microsoft's website. If you'd like more information on what software is available to purchase from the university, take a look at the ITS software sales page.
