How vulnerable is a computer when it is online?
Any computer that has a connection to the Internet is attractive to hackers, worms and viruses. According to studies by the Internet Storm Center (isc.sans.org) the mean time a computer is attached to the internet before it is hacked or infected is currently approximately 23 minutes.

An attack on your computer can occur before you've even finished cleaning out your Inbox for the day. This fact makes having the appropriate virus scan, firewall, and anti-spyware software essential for any Windows PC that will be used to connect to the Internet.
