Awareness Campaign - Computer Security 101

University Assistance with Digital Safety

Protecting the intellectual assets of its students, faculty and staff is a high priority for the University and one of the ways to do this is to keep any computer that may connect to the University network safe. Toward this end, ITS works to ensure that computers connecting to the network are free of security vulnerabilities and malware that could “infect” the University system. Just like you wash your hands to limit the spread of germs, scanning your computer stops the spread of computer-variety viruses.

To help you keep your computer clean ITS provides students, faculty and staff with the most recent version of McAfee VirusScan.  You can find instructions on how to obtain the free virus scan software by referring to QuickNote #26, which can be found at:  http://www.umflint.edu/its/helpdesk/quicknotes.htm.  SpyBot Search & Destroy is available on the ITS QuickDisc, which may be purchased from ITS for $8, and will assist users in preventing malware.  It is also available to download, free of charge, directly from SpyBot's home page

Question 4.  Information Technology Services (ITS) offers the following services to all students, faculty, and staff:

CorrectFree virus, anti-adware and anti-spyware software to all students, faculty, and staff.
Free pizza at midnight on Sundays.
Free spa treatments during exam week.
 Free online dating services.

Free virus scanning software is just one of the methods ITS employs to keep faculty, staff, and students safe.  Make sure to check out the ITS newsblog "Virus Alerts" category for announcements concerning the latest viruses that may affect university members.
