How vulnerable is a computer when it is online?

Any computer that has a connection to the Internet is attractive to hackers, worms and viruses. According to studies by the Internet Storm Center (isc.sans.org) the mean time a computer is attached to the internet before it is hacked or infected is currently approximately 23 minutes.
