You should always protect our student data.  Don’t leave any program accessing student data, such as Banner or the SSEM2000 databases, open when not in use.  Always remember to lock your computer when you need to walk away.

  • To lock a Windows XP or Vista computer, you can use either of these options:
    1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, then click Lock Computer on the Shut Down menu.
    2. Press the Windows logo key + L key.
  • To lock a Macintosh workstation, click on your login name in the upper right corner of the screen, then select Login Window…  Using the screen saver as a method will still allow anyone with administrator privileges to log into the computer as you, this will grant them access to any services you may have saved in your keychain.

If you need further assistance, please call the ITS HelpDesk at 810-766-6804 or email ITSHelpDesk@umflint.edu.

Don’t leave documents or reports containing student data lying around on your desk or printer.  Remember to shred any unwanted documents or reports containing student data.

The U.S. Department of Education on Family Education Rights and Privacy (FERPA) website can explain this law in more detail if you have questions.
