BIOGRAPHY
Ora Boone left his southeastern Missouri home in 1923, at the age of nineteen, for Flint, Michigan, where he found employment at Chevrolet Motor Division, Plant Number Four. He worked on the line initially, later in the skilled trades, and continued at Chevrolet for forty-one years.
He was not directly involved in the 1936-1937 Sit-Down Strike, but joined the UAW immediately afterwards. His papers indicate he was an active member of Local 659, serving as a Shop Committeeman as well as on other committees. He participated in numerous national UAW conventions, starting in 1942.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Ora Boone Papers reflect his activity as a member of the UAW in various functions, as a member of Local 659, as a Shop Committeeman and in other roles, as well as an employee of Chevrolet Motor Division.
The collection contains the proceedings and other materials from national UAW conventions between 1942 and 1977. He was evidently not at some conventions, but most of them within this time span are represented. Besides the national UAW convention materials, the collection consists of Local 659 records, largely from about 1952 to 1962, although there are some from 1942-1943. These largely concern agreements with Chevrolet Motor Division and grievances of employees.
