HISTORY

The Flint Association of the University of Michigan Alumnae was formed in 1921. The first membership meeting was held that October. Membership was open to all female graduates of the University of Michigan and to all female active students attending the University of Michigan. Meetings were usually held quarterly. Numerous fundraising activities financed a scholarship endowment and donations to other projects. An annual Spring Freshman Tea and a Fall Fashion Show raised the most funds. The last meeting of the Association was in 2002-2003.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The collection was received as loose papers; notebooks containing conference materials and service citation award records; three notebooks containing meeting minutes and correspondence; and four scrapbooks dated 1949-1957, 1957-1966, 1967-1974, 1974- . The scrapbooks had been badly damaged by water and mold. A decision was made to dismantle the scrapbooks to prevent further deterioration of the contents and to organize the records by topic. Absent are records pertaining to the association prior to 1949.

Meeting minutes, membership directories, newspaper clippings, and fundraising activities comprise the majority of the collection. The “fundraising activities” folder contains invitations, announcements, flyers, and reports. The “correspondence” folder includes internal memos, correspondence between the Flint Alumnae Association and the Alumnae Council, correspondence with community members, and membership newsletters.
