BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Alfred C. Raphelson was born in Washington, D.C., on July 16, 1927. He studied psychology at the University of Michigan, from which he received the degrees of B.A.(1950), M.A. (1951), and Ph.D. (1956). In 1956, he became one of the original fourteen faculty members of the Flint College of the University of Michigan and the only full-time instructor in psychology until 1963. He retired in 1991.
He was actively involved with the administration of the new school. He was a member of the Executive Committee as well as numerous faculty committees; of the Institutional Planning Committee (1966-1969); Study Committee for the Flint Campus (1969); and the Strategic Planning Committee (1987-1988). His files from these activities have been cataloged separately.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The papers in this collection document his professional activities, especially the correspondence. A number of files are useful for the study of the development of University of Michigan-Flint, including the studies of tenure rates, 1978-1979, and the surveys of the student body by Pollie, 1964. Raphelson's special concerns included curriculum, governance, accreditation, and personnel matters, and material on all of those jobs can be found here. In Box 2, which consists of a later accession, correspondence is divided into files concerning the University of Michigan, concerning psychology, and those concerning students. It includes student and professional papers and articles. Dr. Raphelson was frequently called on to deliver testimonial speeches honoring colleagues, and various folders contain these and other materials on UM-Flint faculty and administrators.
