Biological Sciences
The Biological Sciences division supports the curriculum of the Biology Department, which offers undergraduate degrees.
Monographs. The Biological Sciences collection holds 4561 monographs, which is equivalent to a 2b, and is 58% of the number from the modified ACRL standard (7826). The monographs collection is inadequate to support the undergraduate instruction at UM-Flint. The currency of the collection offers some grounds for satisfaction: 26% of the volumes published in the last decade. However, acquisitions in biology have suffered in the past five years, and do not meet the conspectus minimum requirement that 10% of titles in science divisions to have been published in that period. The median age of the books in this division is 1977.
Acquisitions. The 1997/1998 monographs allocation for the Biology Department is $4107. Taking a proportional share of librarians budgets, plus the reference allocation, yields a weighted total of $4978. This is sufficient to buy approximately 71 books at a discounted average price of $70.25 apiece. This amounts to about 3% of the total domestic publishing output for Biology, for an AC rating of 2a. Acquiring 10% of the publishing output per year would require a monographs allocation of $14,612.
Periodicals. Through FirstSearch, students looking for biology citations can search AGRICOLA, BioDigest, BiolAgrIndex, and BasicBIOSIS. There are 131 Wilson-indexed biological periodical titles, of which the Library has paper subscriptions to 38 (29%=2a) and web access to 7 more (34% total=2b).
