Education
UM-Flint offers an undergraduate program in education, as well as a graduate concentration in educational administration through the MPA program.
Monographs. There are 6,635 monograph titles in the main and reference collections, which is equivalent to a rating of 3a under the modified WLN standards. However, this is augmented significantly by the 3082 titles in children's literature, and 378,063 ERIC documents (10 microfiche cards=1 volume unit equivalent), nearly all of which are available in the microforms room.
Acquisitions. The 1997/1998 monographs allocation for the Education Department is $11,946. Taking a proportional share of librarians budgets, plus the reference allocation, yields a weighted total of $14,478. This is sufficient to buy approximately 470 books at a discounted average price of $30.79 apiece. This amounts to about 24% of the total domestic publishing output for education, for an AC rating of just under 3c. The recently added MPA in educational administration makes it imperative to maintain the growth of the collection at the current level.
Periodicals. Database searching is available in ERIC through MIRLYN and through FirstSearch. The Wilson Index in MIRLYN also contains numerous education-related citations through its Education Index, which is also accessible through FirstSearch). Of 208 Wilson-indexed education periodicals surveyed, the Library subscribes to 66 (32%); an additional 48 are available through the Web, raising the percentage held to 55%. This is equivalent to a 3a rating.
