Job Description and Responsibilities: REFERENCE AND DIGITAL SERVICES LIBRARIAN
The Frances Willson Thompson Library at the University of Michigan-Flint invites applications for the position of Reference & Digital Services Librarian. Under the supervision of the Library Director and working with colleagues, the Reference & Digital Services Librarian at the Thompson Library will develop innovative and effective methods of organizing and delivering library resources to patrons.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Reference Service and Instruction: The Reference & Digital Services Librarian will provide reference assistance and research instruction to library users, both affiliated and unaffiliated with UM-Flint. Some evening and weekend work is required.
Innovation and Communication: The Reference & Digital Services Librarian will work with the Thompson Library webmaster, reference librarians, and technical service librarians, as well as librarians on the Ann Arbor and Dearborn campuses, in using technology and metadata in the development and implementation of innovative methods of organizing and presenting the content of library resources and information.
Other Library, Campus, University, and Professional Activities: The Reference & Digital Services Librarian will also participate in the following activities as assigned:
- Collection development: Selecting and acquiring resources for the Thompson Library.
- Collaborative library activities: Working on projects with other librarians and library staff, in Flint and the other University of Michigan campuses.
- Faculty activities: Serving on faculty committees at the campus and University levels.
- Professional activities: Participating in relevant conferences and meetings, making presentations where appropriate.
RANK, SALARY, & APPOINTMENT
Rank is anticipated at the Assistant Librarian level. Minimum starting salary $36,000, final rank and salary are dependent upon qualifications and experience.
As a professional appointment in the University of Michigan-Flint Frances Willson Thompson Library, this position offers full benefits, and participates fully in faculty governance. (Professional positions receive 24 working days of vacation a year; 15 days of sick leave a year with provisions for extended benefits, as well as TIAA/CREF or Fidelity Retirement options.)

Job Requirements: REQUIRED
- An ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of library technology trends and Library 2.0 concepts.
- Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience in web development.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the creation and use of metadata in a library setting.
- Familiarity with current bibliographic tools in print and digital form, and core reference resources
- Demonstrated ability to work with culturally diverse library patrons and as part of a team.
DESIRED
- One year professional experience in an academic and/or research library environment.
- Experience with HTML, XML, or web development software.
- Academic background in business and management, and/or the social sciences.
