Search Engines

What Are Search Engines?

Internet search engines are huge searchable databases designed to locate public information on the Web. Internet search engines will generally NOT find library books or journal articles. Journal articles may sometimes be accessible on the public Web, however, using the library catalog and databases will retrieve better quality information. Google does NOT have everything you will need. The majority of the libraries databases and catalog will not be found by searching Google.

With all that said, Internet search engines are not horrible resources. Useful information can be found by searching Google, Yahoo and other search engines. Finding legitimate associations, societies, and experts in the field of your research topic can be helpful. Searching for literature on a topic is where problems begin when using a search engine. Publishers and authors do not just put their research and work on the Internet for everyone to view. Keep that in mind. All of the information you find using specialized databases provided by the library are not freely available on the Internet. The library subscribes to these databases.
