Director, Actuarial Accident Fund Insurance Company

I have been working in the actuarial field for approximately six years now and I have found the career path to be very rewarding. For me, being an actuary is the perfect blend of business, math, and finance. I always knew that I liked math, but I never knew of a practical way to apply my analytic skills other than teaching. I am glad that I found out about actuarial science and sought out actuarial work. My work is constantly changing and every day brings something different as there is always a new problem to solve. The field itself is constantly evolving as well, so there are many new and exciting areas to be involved in. Actuaries are very well respected and in the future the will probably be in even higher demand as the insurance and finance industry continues to struggle with communicating and quantifying risk.

U of M - Flint Alumni, 2003

Deciding on a major was obviously one of the most difficult choices I have had to make yet-so-far in my life.  I have always enjoyed math classes, and in the back of my mind I have always known that I wanted math to be a part of whatever career I decided on.  In considering Engineering, Accounting, Teaching, Finance, Computer Science, and a grocery list of other careers, I found many subjects interesting, and realized that that my interests lay beyond just math.  Not long after discovering the Actuarial Science, I knew I had found a major that I was comfortable with.  When I left UM - Flint in 2008, I had not only a college degree in Mathematics, but also athorough understanding of Probability and Statistics, Macroeconomics, Business, Finance, Accounting, Computer Science, as well as passing grades on two actuarial exams!  Even more importantly, I left UM - Flint with a well paying job in a plummeting economy, less than an hour from my hometown.

Graduating from the University of Michigan - Flint with a degree in Actuarial Mathematics was a great preparation for the interesting and broad work I now have the opportunity to perform in my career. Through their amazing professors and diversity of classes, I felt prepared for both the exams needed to earn credintials in the field, as well as feeling prepared with the tools to perform the everyday tasks at work.
