Mission
Goals
(1) To enable UM-Flint students concentrating in mathematics to:
- explore the range and power of mathematical ideas
- follow and construct mathematical proofs and apply mathematical ideas to problem solving
- participate in the mathematical discovery/presentation process
- use appropriate technology applicable to mathematics
- prepare for employment or advanced academic training in mathematics or related fields
(2) To help UM-Flint students in other departments we serve to:
- gain knowledge in mathematics appropriate to their areas of study
- understand uses and applications of mathematics in their fields
- use appropriate technology
(3) To work continuously to improve our teaching by:
| - keeping our pedagogy effective and well-suited to our students - exploring innovations in course content and pedagogy - maintaining high expectations for the academic performance of students - expanding our own understanding of mathematics |
(4) To participate in the creation and dissemination of mathematical ideas by:
- conducting mathematical research
- publishing results in journals and books and presenting talks at conferences and colloquia
- supporting the work of state, national and international mathematical organizations
(5) To further mathematics in the UM-Flint service region by:
- sponsoring mathematics-based events for students and/or their families
- cooperating with other regional mathematics educators
- working to improve mathematical training of pre-service teachers
(6) To be leaders in the UM-Flint community by:
- actively participating in faculty governance, both within the College of Arts and Science and at the University level
- serving as advocates for UM-Flint students
