Speaker: Professor Patrick Pan, Saginaw Valley State University
Title: The Invariant Subspace Problem
Abstract: The Invariant Subspace Problem is one of the most famous unsolved problems in modern analysis. I will describe the problem, some of the progress made over the years, and some related questions. In addition, some social and ethical issues will be discussed.
Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of linear algebra
Bio: Patrick Pan is a professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Saginaw Valley State University. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Beijing University in China, master's and doctorate degrees in mathematics from the University of Connecticut. His main research area is Functional Analysis, especially Operator Theory and Operator Algebras. His hobbies include playing volleyball and card games.
