Admission as a Music Student

For admission as a music major or minor, or to enroll in applied music lessons (private lessons), the Department of Music invites you to apply for admission to the University of Michigan-Flint (complete the admissions application online or download application) and audition for the Department of Music faculty (see dates located on right sidebar of this page).  Once you have been admitted to UM-Flint and accepted as a music student (major, minor, or applied music study), you are officially a "music student."  All music students are advised through the Department of Music.
All auditions will be considered for scholarship.

Audition Procedure - Please read this information carefully.

All auditionees will be required to take a music theory placement test on the day of audition.

For admission and scholarship consideration, students transferring from another music degree program will be required to take a music history placement test in addition to all other requirements.

Please prepare well for your audition.  Generally, you should plan approximately one hour for your audition - 15 minutes for performance and brief interview with faculty, and 30-45 minutes for the music theory placement test.

Instrumentalists  (including guitarists and pianists) will be required to do each of the following during the audition:

a. Prepare and perform a solo on their major instrument (for example a movement from a concerto, sonata, or a Solo and Ensemble Festival solo). An accompanist is preferred, but not required. It is recommended that the selection include contrasting musical material.

b. Prepare and perform all scales from memory.

c. * Read music on sight demonstrating the ability to perform music unseen with a reasonable degree of profiency.

Percussionists: will be required to do each of the following during the audition:

a.  Prepare and perform a solo, study or etudeon snare, one keyboard instrument, or timpani (for example a movement from a concerto, sonata, or a Solo and Ensemble Festival solo). An accompanist is preferred, but not required. It is recommended that the selection include contrasting musical material.

b. Prepare and perform all scales from memory on a keyboard instrument such as xylophone, marimba or vibes.

c. Demonstrate knowledge and ability to perform basic rudimental figures on snare drum.

d. * Read music on sight demonstrating the ability to perform music unseen with a reasonable degree of profiency on a keyboard instrument and/or snare drum.

e. Percussionists may consider an additional demonstration on one of the other instruments not previously performed, or consider a further performance on steel drum or multiple-percussion. While not required, demonstration on other instruments will give the student further credit toward admission and scholarship.

Vocalists: will be required to do each of the following during the audition:

a. Prepare and perform two songs from standard art song literature. An aria may be one of the choices. Vocalists are to make arrangements for an accompanist. The Music Office has a list of accompanists and can be reached at (810) 762-3377. Taped accompaniments are not acceptable.

b. * Sing on sight several short excerpts demonstrating the ability to perform music unseen with a reasonable degree of proficiency.

Please call the Department of Music at (810) 762-3377 to reserve a time for your audition, or to make special arrangements. If you must cancel a scheduled audition, please notify the department as soon as possible. All auditions will be held on the campus of the University of Michigan-Flint, French Hall Room 164.

* Auditionees must be able to read music in either treble or bass clef.
