Julie Anne Carr

Lecturer, Applied Voice

Julie Anne Carr's 2013 performances have included solo vocal features in Vivaldi's Gloria, Mozart's Coronation Mass and Sondheim's Into the Woods.  As an active performer in recitals and independent musical revues, she has also recently participated in the original local theatrical productions of A Gorey Funeral and Mushrooms. Carr is currently a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and the Greater Flint Arts Council.

Jessica Cech

Jessica Cech has been a featured artist in the Flint Institute of Music's Chamber Series Concerts for the last six years.  She was a guest artist in the St. Clair Shores Concert Series in 2012 and was a featured soloist in the Music at St. Paul's Series (Flint, MI) in 2011. In addition to her current position at the University of Michigan-Flint, Cech teaches flute at the Flint School of Performing Arts.

James Coviak

Lecturer, Applied Percussion, Steelheads Percussion Ensemble

James Coviak, percussionist and director of the internationally acclaimed steel drum band, Steelheads, has recently performed at the Lionel Hampton and TAC Jazz Festivals.  In addition to working with international recording artist Andy Narell, Coviak’s former students have recently performed with saxophonist Kenny G, and with guitarist Jack White at the 2013 Grammy Awards.

Brian DiBlassio

Associate Professor of Music and Department Chair, Music Theory and Jazz

Brian DiBlassio received the Lois Rosen Excellence in Teaching Award at UM-Flint in 2011.  He performs in the Latin jazz groups Los Gatos and Tumbao Bravo, whose recent CD release received a 2013 Detroit Music Award.  His orchestrations and compositions have been performed by the Flint Symphony Orchestra and featured on local and national television.  DiBlassio recently traveled to Austria to present a paper at the 1st International Clare Fischer Symposium.

Tracy Dunlop

Lecturer, Applied Violin

Tracy Dunlop  has been teaching violin and viola for over 25 years.  Prior to teaching at UM-Flint she was Adjunct Professor of Violin at Gonzaga University.  Dunlop was the principal 2nd violin for the New American Chamber Orchestra (Madrid, Spain) and the Knoxville Symphony.  She has also performed with the Oregon Symphony and the Nashville Chamber Orchestra.  In addition, Dunlop has served as concertmaster of the Broadway Touring Productions, the Rockford Symphony (Illinois) and the Spokane Opera.  As associate concertmaster, she has performed with the Tacoma, Spokane and Elgin Symphonies.  Currently, Dunlop performs with the Flint Symphony Orchestra and with the Flint, Rochester, Saginaw and Michigan opera Orchestras.

Christopher Heidenreich

Assistant Professor of Music, Wind Symphony Conductor, Applied Trumpet

Christopher Heidenreich is the recipient of the 2013 UM-Flint Distinguished Service Award.  His edition of the Kalinnikov Symphony No. 1 in G Minor arranged by Glenn Cliffe Bainum was published by the Hal Leonard Corporation in 2011. Heidenreich was recently named conductor of the Washtenaw Community Concert Band and was awarded the American School Band Directors Association's Distinguished Band Director Award in the North Central Region of the Midwest.

Gabriela Hristova was awarded the 2012 Lucinda Stone Junior Women Faculty Award for her research on Bulgarian Choral and Singing Traditions. Recently elected as the president for the Michigan chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, she hosted the Michigan ACDA Fall Convention at the First Presbyterian Church in Flint.

Joshua May is an active performer of opera, oratorio, and art song, performing at numerous prestigious festivals and programs including the Atlantic Music Festival, Harrower Opera Workshop, Intermezzo Opera Festival, Halifax Summer Opera Workshop, Tyrolean Opera Program, Contemporary Americana Festival, and the Aspen Music Festival.  Before joining UM-Flint, May served on the faculty of the Community School of the Arts at the University of Connecticut.  He received his Masters of Music from the New England Conservatory and has completed his doctoral vocal studies at the University of Connecticut.

Timothy Michling

Lecturer, Applied Oboe

Timothy Michling is the principal oboist of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra. An avid performer, Michling frequently appears with numerous other groups throughout Michigan and the surrounding region, including the Flint Symphony Orchestra, Toledo Symphony Orchestra, Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra, and the Michigan Philharmonic. Tim is also an accomplished woodwind specialist, and was a member of the pit orchestra during the North American Tour of Meredith Wilson's "The Music Man" in 2003-2004, playing oboe, English horn, flute, piccolo, clarinet, and bassoon. In addition to his work with students at the University of Michigan-Flint, Tim provides instruction as a member of the music faculty at Oakland University.   Tim earned both his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he studied with Nancy-Ambrose King. In addition, he studied with Allan Vogel at the prestigious Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, where he earned his Artist Diploma. Tim also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Jeffrey Price

Jeffery Price is a collaborative performer and educator, recently performing new music at the Windsor Canadian Music Festival.  He performs regularly with the UM-Flint Faculty Jazz Ensemble as well as with faculty chamber groups at the Flint School for Performing Arts.  Price is an active clinician in the Genesee area and is a candidate to present at the 2014 North American Saxophone Alliance national convention.

Patrick Prouty is currently composing a piece for the UM-Flint University Orchestra in honor of Emeritus Professor Walker E. Fesmire’s generous establishment of The Chieko Fesmire String Instrument Scholarship.  Music from Prouty’s CD, The Charmed Life, was recently featured in AMC’s television show, Breaking Bad.  His fourth CD, New American Daydream, earned the Detroit Music Award for Best Jazz Recording of 2012.

Karen Salvador

Karen Salvador's research on equity in music instruction appeared most recently in Arts Education Policy Review and Update: Applications of Research in Music Education.  She is contributing a chapter on musician identity to the book Music Education: Navigating the Future.  Salvador frequently presents at music education workshops and conferences locally and around the US, and teaches early childhood music at the UM-Flint Early Childhood Development Center.
