2016-2017 Season - Little Red Riding Hood and Captain Lovelock
We are excited to offer Little Red Riding Hood by Seymour Barab and Captain Lovelock by John Duke for our 2016-2017 opera season! These American operas will reach students and families across our region thanks to the generosity of the Michigan Council for Arts & Cultural Affairs and the Welch Foundation. We invite you to attend one of our FREE performances that are hosted throughout Flint by our community partners. Students will get to learn about performance and music education with exciting lessons and experience live opera throughout our season! We hope you'll join on us as we share the gift of music with our community! For more information, please follow our Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/operaworkshopumflint/
Goals of the Opera Outreach Ensemble
- Develop and implement educational opera outreach programs for students
- Provide resources to the public to increase awareness of opera
- Create a supportive environment for young artists to practice and develop their craft
The mission of the University of Michigan-Flint Opera Outreach is to foster musical growth, understanding, and appreciation in students of all ages through opera performance and music education. The Opera Outreach program is committed to providing in-depth music and arts experiences for students in our local community. Our primary goal of the program is to encourage and enrich artistic engagement through our outreach performances. We aim to instill a lifelong artistic curiosity in students through our interactive classroom and performance experiences.
As part of our mission, we bring active learning lessons that connect music to multiple core curriculum disciplines. Our teaching artists, UM-Flint Music Education students, develop lesson plans that teach math, science, reading, theater arts, foreign languages, geography, and story-telling to the elements of music. Students will be guided through a variety of learning activities that engage students in the classroom, while preparing them for our opera performance at their schools.
